First to Learn to Drive

This message is for the son who happened to learn to drive first and became the whole family's transport for twenty years, who now cannot let a phone ring out even when three other people in that family have cars and licenses

He was eighteen and he passed his test on the second try, and that is the entire origin story.

Nobody sat him down. There was no arrangement. He simply had a license and a car with a working heater before anybody else in that family did, and so when his grandmother needed the clinic, he took her, and when his cousin's shift changed, he did the pickup, and when the youngest one started college three hours away, he drove.

That was 2006. It is now twenty years later, and there are four drivers in that family, two of them with better cars than his, and the phone still rings at his house.

There is a chair by his front door where he sits to put his shoes on. His wife calls it the chair by the door and she says it like a joke, but it is not entirely a joke, because he is in it more evenings than he is in the front room.

Last Thursday he got a call at half past nine and he was in the chair with one shoe on before he had asked what was wrong, and it turned out to be nothing, and he sat there afterward with the shoe in his hand.

And here is what he has never said in that family: nobody ever decided this. He passed a driving test at eighteen, and twenty years of a whole family's logistics got attached to it, and the attachment has never once been reviewed.

Nobody decided this

Go looking for the moment. The conversation, the family meeting, the day somebody said: from now on, this one drives everybody.

There is no such moment. What happened instead is that a need appeared and a capable young man was standing nearby, and that is how almost every permanent job in a family gets handed out. Not by decision. By proximity and competence.

You did not grab it. You were eighteen and somebody needed the clinic.

You are the reason a great many people in that family got where they had to be for twenty years, and none of it was you needing to be needed. That is not a kind thing somebody is saying to a stranger. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which means two decades of driving are written down somewhere properly, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to take something off you rather than to add a line.

And Moses, who was doing the whole of Israel's problems personally, says one sentence to God that is worth reading twice.

I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.Numbers 11:14

That is not a failure of faith and God does not rebuke him for it. God's answer, a few verses later, is to spread the weight across seventy other people. The whole episode is in Scripture to say plainly that one person carrying what a community should carry is a fault in the arrangement rather than a virtue in the person.

Helping and being on call are two different things

Helping is a thing you do and then it is done. Being on call is a state, and a state does not end, and it changes how you sit in your own front room in the evening.

The test is simple. When you do not take the call, does something actually go wrong, or does somebody else in that family finally take a turn.

You have been treating inconvenience for them as danger for years, and the two were never the same reading. Scripture puts it plainly in Galatians 6:2, where the church is told to bear one another's burdens, which is a plural instruction to a whole body rather than a private contract with one man and a car, and the Holy Spirit is at work in every one of those four drivers without needing your keys to be on the hook.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Putting a job down is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody back into anything unsafe. If somebody in that family is genuinely in danger, go, and do not think twice about it. And if what is being asked of you is not heavy but harmful, get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.2 Thessalonians 3:3

Establish and keep. Both of those are His verbs in that sentence. You are established by Him rather than by being the one who always comes, and that footing does not shift on the night you let a phone ring out. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 puts the keeping in God rather than in your availability, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a man who has been reaching for his keys since 2006.

The breakthrough

The phone call was never the enemy. People ring you because you come, and you come because you love them, and there is nothing in that whole chain that is wrong.

What has gone wrong is the arithmetic. Moses said it out loud: too heavy for one. And the answer God gave him was not to try harder, and it was not to care less. It was more shoulders.

> Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. > Ecclesiastes 4:9

Two are better. Not two are acceptable when one is unavailable. Better. You are inside a family designed to be carried by more than one man, and that design was not drawn up because you fell short somewhere. Ecclesiastes 4:9 makes shared load the good arrangement rather than the fallback, and the Holy Spirit is the one who nudges the other three toward their turn without you having to ask.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here asks you to tell your cousins anything, set out a new arrangement, or explain to your grandmother why you did not come. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know that nobody decided this, and to stop living as though somebody had.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that family is His and always was.

  1. Weight of the whole family, you are too heavy for one man and God never said otherwise. Numbers 11:14 has Moses saying that out loud and getting seventy shoulders instead of a rebuke, and I am done pretending the arithmetic works. In the name of Jesus I am setting you down.
  2. Guilt for the call I do not take, you have no authority in this house tonight. The Holy Spirit is at work in all four of those drivers, and Galatians 6:2 hands the carrying to a whole body rather than to one man with keys. I am in this family as a son today, and I am not the transport.
  3. Lord, You were in that car in 2006 and You have been on every road since. I thank You, because Your word says You have not forgotten one mile of it and You have never once billed me for it. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and this chair by the door is mine, and tonight I am not sitting in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
