Four Hours Each Way

This message is for the man who drove four hours each way, twice a year for nine years, to a door that got answered less and less, and who did not make the drive last spring, and has not been able to decide since whether that was surrender

Four hours out, four hours back, twice a year, for nine years. He worked it out one night and it comes to seventy-two hours on that road, which is three whole days of his life spent driving to a house.

The first two years he was let in. There was coffee, and it was awkward, and it was something.

Then it got shorter. Then it was on the step. The seventh year he stood at that door for eleven minutes and it did not open, and he could hear the television, and he left the box on the mat and drove home.

Last spring, in March, he got as far as putting his boots by the door on the Friday night, and on the Saturday morning he did not go.

He has not told his wife how much that Saturday has cost him. She knows he did not go. She does not know that he has spent most of the year since trying to work out whether he quit.

And here is what he has not said to a single living soul: he does not know if not driving was wisdom or whether it was the day he gave up on his own brother.

Look at those nine years honestly

Before anything comes off you, let somebody describe them properly, because nobody in that family ever has.

Eighteen drives. Nobody made you go. Nobody thanked you for going. You went in weather, you went the year of the transmission, you went the year your knee was bad. And you never once turned up with a speech or a demand. You turned up with a box and a coffee flask and you took whatever was on the other side of that door.

That is not obsession and it is not weakness. That is nine years of a man doing what was his to do.

You are somebody who kept turning up long after anybody would have blamed you for stopping, and heaven has that written down accurately. Nobody is being kind to you here. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, and seventy-two hours on a road is work, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift a weight rather than to hand you a bill.

And Jesus, sending men out to do exactly this kind of thing, gives an instruction about what to do when a door does not open.

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.Matthew 10:14

He does not say try harder. He does not say go back in the spring. He gives them a physical action for leaving, and He gives it to them in advance, before it happens, because He knew it would.

An unopened door is in the instructions. It is not a scenario He forgot to plan for.

Stopping and quitting are not the same thing

Quitting is abandoning something that was yours to carry. What you did last March was stop carrying something that was never yours in the first place, which is a different act entirely and it is not on the same shelf.

Your brother's door is his door. Whether it opens is a decision that has been made eighteen times by somebody who is not you.

You are free of an outcome you were never holding, and you were never the one who could open that door from the outside. Scripture puts the boundary plainly in Romans 12:18, where peace is limited twice over, by what is possible and by what lies in you, and the Holy Spirit is at work in your brother's life today without a single further drive being needed.

Where your part ends

Say it straight and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed toward anything, and nothing here tells you to go back. This category does not advise contact. And if there is a reason that door should stay shut for your own safety, then it staying shut is a mercy and this page treats it as one. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, every single time.

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.Deuteronomy 33:27

Underneath, which is where a man needs it when he has been standing on his own persistence for nine years. You are held up from below by something that has never depended on your mileage, and it was under you on that step for all eleven minutes. Deuteronomy 33:27 puts the refuge in God rather than in the driving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man feel the arms rather than merely believe in them.

The breakthrough

The door was never the enemy. Behind it is a man with his own history and his own fear, and the reason it stopped opening is almost certainly not about the quality of your visits.

What is costing you is not the stopping. It is the question you have been chewing on all year: whether a better man would have gone in March anyway.

> He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? > Micah 6:8

Three requirements, and none of them is a distance in miles. You have met every one of them for nine years, and the standard was never eighteen drives or nineteen. Micah 6:8 sets the whole requirement without a mileage figure anywhere in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to read that as a release instead of as a new test.

Nothing here tells you to drive again. Nothing here says a different approach would have opened that door, because that is not true and it would be cruel to suggest it. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reconciliation: the right to know that your part is complete, and to stop grading a Saturday you were never obliged to spend.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are standing. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own part was given to you, and no closed door can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame any man with how little he was carrying. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with my brother is His and always was.

  1. Nine years of that road, you are not a debt and God never put me on you. Matthew 10:14 hands a man an instruction for a door that does not open, and He gave it out before anybody had even set off. In the name of Jesus I am shaking the dust off my boots.
  2. Question about whether I quit in March, you have no authority in this house. The Holy Spirit is at work in my brother right now, and Micah 6:8 lists what is required and there is no mileage anywhere in the verse. I am his brother today, and I am carrying no journey.
  3. Lord, You were in the truck for all eighteen of those drives and You were on that step for the eleven minutes. I thank You, because Your word says You do not forget the work or the love, and You have never once billed me for a Saturday. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
