Peace Worth MakingIsaiah 32:17

Eleven Years of Smooth Evenings

This message is for the son who has steered every family gathering away from one subject for eleven years, and who has started to notice that he calls an evening a success when nothing happened in it

He gets there forty minutes early. He always has. Forty minutes is what it takes to find out who is coming, who is sitting where, and which of the two subjects is live tonight.

Then he works. He moves the chairs so that his aunt is not across from his father. He asks his cousin about the new job before anybody else can ask about the old one. When the room starts drifting toward the year everything happened, he stands up, claps his hands once, says the bread is going cold, and the room turns like a boat and follows him.

At eleven at night he carries the last of the plates in, and his mother touches his arm at the sink and says, that was a lovely evening. And he agrees, because it was. Nothing happened. Nobody left early. Nobody said the name.

He drives home with the window down and the heat still coming off the day, and somewhere on the second road he notices what he is feeling, and it is not gladness. It is the specific emptiness of a man who has finished a shift.

Eleven years of that. And here is the sentence he has never said in that courtyard: he cannot remember the last time he sat at that table and was simply one of the people eating.

A smooth evening is a piece of work

Let me name what you have been doing before one gram of it comes off you, because nobody in that courtyard has ever named it and it deserves saying out loud.

That evening did not go well. That evening was managed, and one man managed it. It ran on a calculation that never rests: who is speaking to whom this month, which chair faces which chair, how long a silence can sit before it has to be filled, when to stand and clap your hands and turn the whole boat. That is not nothing. That is a full shift, unpaid, with no cover and no end date, worked while everybody else was having their dinner.

You are the reason that family has eaten together for eleven years, and you were never once cowardly for keeping it that way. Do not read that as flattery. Isaiah 32:17 puts quietness on the far side of righteousness rather than in place of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into you now instead of letting it slide past as a warm thought.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.Isaiah 32:17

Read the order in that verse, because the order is the whole thing. Righteousness first. Peace is what it produces. Quietness is the third thing, the residue, what is left in a room after something true has been done in it. Isaiah never says arrange the quietness and the righteousness will follow. That is the exact reverse, and the reverse is the shift you have been working for eleven years.

What the blessing actually lands on

Keeping the peace is free to everybody in the room except the keeper. That is how you tell the two apart, and it is the only test that has ever worked.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Hear who that blessing is aimed at. Not the ones who never caused any trouble. Not the smooth ones. The makers. And what is attached to it is not a prize but a family name, which means the thing you have spent eleven years trying to earn by steering is a thing you were already called.

You have that name on you tonight, and it was never issued on the strength of a quiet evening. The written word puts it in Matthew 5:9 as a naming rather than a wage, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds on the nights when the boat turns and on the nights when it does not.

A keeper steers around the subject. A maker sits down at the table as himself and lets the evening be whatever it honestly is.

Where your part ends

Before another line goes past, this has to be said plainly rather than assumed. Making peace is never the same as handing yourself over to be hurt. If what waits in that house is not a difficult family but a dangerous one, nothing here asks you to walk back in. Get yourself safe. Tell one real person who can actually do something. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and no verse in this article is available to hold anybody in a room they need to leave.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.Romans 12:18

Paul draws the line himself and then puts you on one side of it. As much as lieth in you. You have one side of that line and only one side, and the other side was never issued to you. That limit is written into Romans 12:18 rather than being a concession anybody is making to you, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in that family for eleven years without once needing your permission to move.

The breakthrough

The subject was never the enemy. The subject is that family telling the truth about itself, and one man has been standing up and clapping his hands for eleven years to stop it.

You have a voice, and it was given to you for more than turning a boat. James says the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, and the order in that sentence is not decorative.

> But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated. > James 3:17

You have that order inside you now, and honesty and gentleness stopped being rivals in your family the day Christ moved into you. That order is written down in James 3:17 and is not a temperament you failed to be born with, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the wisdom rather than leaving you to manufacture it forty minutes early.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs your father to change, your aunt to apologize, or anybody at that table to agree with a word of it. What is being handed back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know what you have actually been doing all these years, and to stop calling it by the wrong name inside your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true in your own family was given to you and it is not that table's to grant or withdraw. Scripture is the ground under every word of it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

The measure Jesus set was a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little they had. He set it there because a mountain never moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened their mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that family is His and it always was.

  1. Smooth evening, you are not peace and God never counted you as peace. Isaiah 32:17 puts quietness on the far side of righteousness and never in place of it, and this family is loved far too much to be steered around forever. In the name of Jesus I am putting the tray down.
  2. Dread of being the one who ruins it, you have no say over where I sit tonight. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 lands that name on the makers, never on the ones who kept the boat straight. I am at this table as myself, and I am not steering one person in it.
  3. Lord, You were in that courtyard through every one of the eleven years I spent working the room. I thank You, because Your word never mistook my steering for peace and You never once held it against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and the chair I sit in is mine, and I am sitting down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
