He wrote it by hand, which he has never done before or since, and it took him four evenings.
He did not defend himself in it. That was the whole discipline of the thing. He said what he had done, plainly, without the paragraph that explains why. He said what he understood now that he had not understood then. He said he would like to see him and that if that was not possible he would understand. He read it aloud to himself twice, took out one sentence that was doing something clever, and put it in an envelope.
That was eight years ago in the spring.
There has been nothing. Not a reply, not a refusal, not a message through anybody. He knows the letter arrived because his sister confirmed it, and after that the subject closed.
And here is the part he has never told anybody: he still checks. Not every day any more. But when the phone shows a number he does not recognize, there is a half second before he answers, and that half second has been going on for eight years.
Look at what you actually did
Before anything is lifted, let the work be described accurately, because nobody has ever described it back to you.
You wrote a letter with no defense in it. That is rarer than you know. Most people who write that letter write it with an argument buried in the second half, because the argument is what makes the writing bearable, and you took yours out on purpose. Four evenings, one clever sentence removed, and no conditions attached to what came back.
That is a completed piece of work. Not a failed attempt. A completed one.
You are somebody who finished a hard thing all the way to the end, and eight years of silence has not turned it into a failure. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which means the four evenings and the envelope are on record properly, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to release something rather than to reopen it.
And Jeremiah, sitting in the wreckage of everything, says something about waiting that is worth reading slowly.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.Lamentations 3:26
Quietly wait. Not actively wait, not strategically wait, not wait while preparing the next approach. Quietly. And the object of the waiting in that verse is the Lord's own salvation rather than another person's decision, which means the thing being waited for was never in anybody else's hands.
The half second is not your fault and it is not your job
That flicker when an unknown number comes up is not a failure of faith. It is a body that loved somebody and has not been given an ending. Bodies do that. It will probably keep doing it for a while and there is nothing wrong with you.
But it is worth being clear about what it is not. It is not an assignment. Nothing about that half second means the matter is still open on your side of the ledger.
You are free right now, and the freedom did not have to wait for a reply to arrive. Scripture puts the boundary plainly in Romans 12:18, where peace is qualified by if it be possible and as much as lies in you, and the Holy Spirit is at work in that man's life today without a single further move from you being required.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed toward anything, and nothing here asks anybody to try again. And if the reason for that silence is that contact would not be safe, then the silence is a protection and not a wound, and nothing on this page treats it otherwise. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, every single time.
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.Psalm 18:2
Three names, all of them places rather than efforts. You are standing inside all three of them already, and none of them was built out of whether a letter got answered. Psalm 18:2 puts the fortress in God rather than in an outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to live in it while a phone stays quiet.
The silence was never the enemy. Somewhere on the other end of it is a man who has his own reasons, most of which have nothing to do with the quality of a letter, and none of which you are in a position to see.
What has been costing you is not the not knowing. It is the small permanent assumption underneath the half second: that as long as there is no reply, the matter is still on your desk.
> Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. > Philippians 1:6
He will perform it. The performing belongs to Him, in you, and by extension in that man, and no part of that machinery runs on your correspondence. You are inside a work that somebody else is completing, and you were never the one holding it open. Philippians 1:6 puts the finishing in His hands rather than in yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the actual work in a man eight years away who has never written back.
Nothing here tells you to write again. This page does not advise contact and never will. Nothing here suggests a better letter would have worked, because that is not true and it would be cruel. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reply: the right to know that your part is complete, and to stop carrying an outcome that was never yours.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no silence can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with that man is His and always was.
- Silence of eight years, you are not my verdict and God never made you my report card. Lamentations 3:26 puts the waiting on the Lord's salvation and not on another man's answer, and my part went into the mail in the spring. In the name of Jesus I am done reading you as a grade.
- Fear that a better letter would have brought him, you have no authority over my evenings. The Holy Spirit is at work in that man today, and Philippians 1:6 says the One who began the work is the One who performs it. I am standing here as myself, and I am not holding one thing open.
- Lord, You were at that table when I wrote it and You were on the road when I posted it. I thank You, because Your word says You do not forget the work and the love, and You have never once billed me for the silence that followed. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
