Her friend meant it kindly. That is the part that makes it hard to be angry about.
They were at coffee and it came up, the way it does about once a year, and her friend listened properly and then said: have you thought about writing to her rather than calling. Just once. Sometimes people can read what they cannot hear.
She said she would think about it, and she went home and sat in the car on the drive for a while.
Because here is the list. She has called. She has written, twice, once by hand. She has gone through a third party, which she hated and did anyway. She has apologized for things she did not think she had done, because a book said the apology matters more than the accuracy. She has given space, for eighteen months, which was itself suggested by somebody as a strategy. She has sent gifts and stopped sending gifts. She has prayed in four different ways that four different people have recommended.
Nine years of a list.
And here is what she has never said out loud to a single person: every time somebody adds an item, she feels the same small drop in her chest, and the drop is not hope. It is the discovery that she is not finished after all.
The list is the problem, not your position on it
Let me name the mechanism before anything else, because your friend will never see it and it is not her fault that she cannot.
A list like that has no end built into it. There is always one more approach, because human ingenuity is endless and other people's suggestions are free. As long as the list exists, you are permanently mid-task, and no amount of effort can ever move you into the category of somebody who has done enough.
That is not a failure of persistence on your part. That is a structural property of lists.
You are not somebody who has not tried hard enough, and nine years of effort is not evidence of a missing item. That is not a kind opinion somebody is offering. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which means every single item on that list is on record, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to close something rather than to extend it.
And Paul, who had a thing he could not fix and asked three times, is given an answer that is not another method.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9
Three times. Not once and then noble acceptance. Three. And what he gets back is not a fourth technique and it is not a rebuke for asking. It is a word about sufficiency: there is already enough, and the enough is not something Paul is required to produce.
Trying and being responsible are two different things
You have tried. Nothing on this page reduces one item on that list, and every one of them was real.
But trying is what you do, and responsibility is what you carry, and somewhere in nine years the second one attached itself to the first. Now the list is not a set of attempts. It is a measure of whether you are permitted to stop.
You are permitted to stop, and the permission was never in the gift of the person who is not speaking to you. Scripture puts it plainly in Romans 12:18, where peace is limited twice, by possibility and by what lies in you, and the Holy Spirit is at work in her life today without item ten being required.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed at anybody, and nothing here suggests one more thing to try. This category does not advise contact and it will not hand you an eleventh idea. And if there is a reason contact would not be safe, the distance is a protection and this page treats it as one. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, every single time.
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
Rest, given. Not earned by finishing the list, not held back pending completion. You are being handed rest right now, in the middle of an unfinished list, by somebody who is not waiting for it to be finished. Matthew 11:28 puts the giving in His hands rather than in your progress, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it real in a car on a drive with a cold coffee in the holder.
Your friend was never the enemy. She loves you and she wants this fixed for you, and a person who wants something fixed reaches for a method, because methods are the only thing a bystander can offer.
What is costing you is not her suggestion. It is that you accepted, years ago, without ever deciding to, that the reconciliation was an assignment with your name on it and a completion date you kept missing.
> For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. > Ephesians 2:8
Not of works. That is the sentence that undoes a list. You are held by grace rather than by effort, and no item you have not thought of yet is standing between you and God. Ephesians 2:8 puts the whole thing outside the economy of trying, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to a woman who has been treating a relationship the way she was taught never to treat her salvation.
Nothing here gives you an eleventh thing. Nothing here says the letter your friend suggested would work, because nobody knows that and pretending otherwise would be cruel. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reconciliation: the right to close the list, and to stop feeling the drop in your chest every time somebody adds to it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no well meaning friend can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with her is His and always was.
- List of things I should still try, you are finished and God never issued you. 2 Corinthians 12:9 answered a man who asked three times, and the answer was not a fourth method, it was that there is already enough. In the name of Jesus I am closing you.
- Drop in my chest every time somebody adds an item, you have no authority over me today. The Holy Spirit is at work in her life right now, and Ephesians 2:8 says the whole thing is a gift and not of works. I am here as myself today, and I am carrying no assignment.
- Lord, You have been beside me for every single item on that list, including the three I did not believe in. I thank You, because Your word says Your grace is sufficient and You have never once told me it was not. Whatever You do with her is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
2 Corinthians 12:9
