Peace Worth MakingPsalm 120:7

Fifty Years of Not Minding

This message is for the grandmother who has answered I do not mind for fifty years, who is asked her preference at every family gathering and can no longer locate a single thing she actually minds

They asked her at the reunion where she wanted to sit, and she said she did not mind.

They asked her which of the two churches to hold the service at, and she did not mind. They asked her whether the ham or the chicken, whether Saturday or Sunday, whether the picture of her husband should go on the table by the door or the one by the window. She did not mind. She has never minded. It is the first thing anybody in that family would tell you about her, and they say it warmly, the way you would describe a good road.

She got home that night and sat on the edge of the bed with one shoe off, and she went looking for something she did mind, just to see if it was still in there. She looked for a while. The house was very quiet. What came back was not an opinion, it was a fact, and the fact was that she could not find one.

Fifty years. Fifty years of I do not mind, and somewhere in the middle of them the sentence stopped being a kindness she offered and turned into the only sentence she has.

And here is the part she would not say to a soul in that family: the not minding started out as love, and she is no longer sure what it is now.

The kindness that turned into a job

Let me say the true thing about those fifty years before one ounce of it comes off your back, because I doubt anybody in that family has ever said it out loud.

You did not start this because you were weak. You started it because you were the one who could go without, and going without kept a table from splitting. Somewhere back there you worked out that a family runs smoother when one person has no preferences, and you found you could be that person, and being good at it is exactly how it quietly became your post.

You are the reason that family has kept sitting down together, and not one of those fifty years was cowardice. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Psalm 56:8 says God keeps count of your wanderings and puts your tears in His bottle, which means the going without was watched and recorded rather than assumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to lift it off you and not to bill you for it.

But there is a second thing, and the psalm that says it says it in seven words.

I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.Psalm 120:7

Hear what that man is doing in that verse. He is for peace and he speaks anyway. He does not go quiet in order to stay peaceable. He opens his mouth, and the trouble that follows is not laid at his door, because the war was theirs and the peace was his. The psalm never says a word against him for speaking.

The blessing lands on the maker

Keeping the peace costs the family nothing and costs the keeper her whole preference. That is how you tell one from the other, and it is the only test that has ever held up.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Read who that blessing is for. Not the easy ones. Not the ones who never wanted anything. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name rather than a ribbon, which means the standing you have spent half a century buying with your own preferences is a standing that was already yours by a road you never had to pay for.

You have that name on you tonight, and it was not issued for fifty years of going along and it does not get pulled for one plain sentence. Matthew 5:9 hands it out as a naming and not as wages, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds in a quiet bedroom with one shoe off.

A keeper has no preference. A maker has one and knows it is not a weapon.

Where your part ends

This wants saying plainly and not hinting at. Making peace has never meant handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is in that family is not difficult but dangerous, nothing on this page asks you to walk back in and be gracious about it. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold on to this: being safe is not a failure of peace. Not one verse here is available to keep anybody in a room they need to be out of.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.Romans 12:18

Paul puts two limits in one line, and both of them are for you. If it be possible. As much as lieth in you. You have your own side of that and nothing beyond it, and the far side was never handed to you to carry. Romans 12:18 draws that boundary itself rather than anybody drawing it for you, and the Holy Spirit has been working in that family for fifty years without ever needing you to go without in order to get started.

The breakthrough

The preference was never the trouble. A preference spoken plainly is a person telling the truth in a room, and for fifty years the truth in that family has been supplied by everybody except you.

You have a voice, and it was given to you for more than smoothing a table. James puts the order of real wisdom in one sentence, and the order is doing work.

> But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated. > James 3:17

Pure first. Peaceable second. They were never rivals. You have that whole order in you already, and honesty stopped being the enemy of gentleness in your family the day Christ moved in. James 3:17 sets that sequence down deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the wisdom rather than leaving a woman on the edge of a bed to manufacture it on her own.

Nothing here asks for a conversation. Nothing here needs your daughter to notice, your sister to change, or anybody at that reunion to hand you the seat. What is coming back to you is smaller and a great deal heavier than a resolution: the right to know what those fifty years actually were, and to stop calling them by the wrong name in your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are sitting. Not inside your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and that family cannot hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that small to shame anybody with how little they were holding. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a woman's faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with that family is His and always was.

  1. I do not mind, you are not peace and God never asked you to speak for me. Psalm 120:7 shows a man who was for peace and opened his mouth anyway, and no war that followed was ever laid at his door. In the name of Jesus I am done handing you my whole sentence.
  2. Fear of being the difficult one, you have no say in this room tonight. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the women who wanted nothing. I am here as myself this evening, and I am not managing a single soul in this family.
  3. Lord, You sat with me through fifty years of going along and You never once mistook it for peace. I thank You, because Your word counted every year of it and You have not held one against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and the sentence in my mouth is mine, and I am saying it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
