Fourteen Cards

This message is for the woman who sent her brother a birthday card every year for fourteen years and never once had it acknowledged, and who did not send one this March, and has not been able to work out since whether that was peace or the day she stopped loving him

She kept the receipts in a drawer for a while, which she is now slightly embarrassed about, but she wanted to be able to prove she had sent them.

Fourteen years. His birthday is the eleventh of March. She never missed one, not the year she was ill, not the year of the move. She never wrote much in them, because she had learned early on that anything she wrote could be read as pressure. Usually just his name at the top, something about the weather, and her name at the bottom.

No reply. Not one, in fourteen years. Not an acknowledgment, not a returned envelope, nothing.

This March she was in a shop and she saw a card that would have suited him, the sort with a heron on it, and she stood in front of it for a bit and then she did not buy it.

And she has been arguing with herself ever since. Some days it is: fourteen years is a long time and stopping is allowed. Other days, usually in the evening, it is: you stopped because you got tired, and love does not get tired, and if you had loved him properly you would have bought the heron.

And here is what she has never said to anybody at all: she cannot tell whether this March was peace arriving or the exact day she gave up on her only brother.

Fourteen years is not a warm up

Let me put those years down properly before an ounce comes off them, because you have never let yourself count them as anything.

Fourteen cards, sent to somebody who never once responded, with no pressure written in any of them and no strategy behind them. That is not a person trying to get a result. A person trying to get a result changes the approach around year four. You did the same thing, without escalation, for fourteen years, which is not persistence looking for a payoff. It is just love, posted.

You are somebody who kept doing a small faithful thing long after anybody was watching, and heaven has that recorded exactly right. That is not a kind opinion somebody is offering. Matthew 6:6 has Jesus saying that your Father sees in secret, and fourteen unacknowledged cards is about as secret as a thing gets, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift a weight rather than to add one.

And Solomon puts stopping into the same list as starting, without ranking them.

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away.Ecclesiastes 3:6

Both halves of that verse are described as times. Not one good and one bad. Not one faithful and one weary. The whole chapter is built on the idea that there are seasons for opposite things and that being in the second one is not evidence of having failed at the first.

Getting tired and giving up are two different things

You are tired. Fourteen years of a one-way thing would make anybody tired, and tiredness is a physical fact rather than a moral one.

Giving up would mean deciding he is not worth it. Nothing in this story suggests that has happened. You stood in front of a heron card in March, which is not what somebody who has given up does.

You are still somebody's sister today, and one unsent card did not revoke that. Scripture puts the boundary plainly in Romans 12:18, where peace is limited by what is possible and by what lies in you, and the Holy Spirit is at work in your brother's life today without a fifteenth card being part of the mechanism.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed at anybody, and nothing here tells you to buy a card. This category does not advise contact. And if there is a reason the silence between you has been a protection, then it has been a protection and this page will not call it a wound. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, always.

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18

Nigh. Close by, already, without being summoned. You are being stood beside right now, and the standing does not pause on the years you cannot manage a card. Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness in God rather than in your consistency, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it felt in a shop in March in front of a rack of cards.

The breakthrough

The heron card was never the enemy. It is a nice card and he would have liked it, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to buy it.

What is costing you is the trial. It is that you have appointed yourself prosecutor about one unsent card and you have been running the case every evening since March.

> There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. > Romans 8:1

Now. Not after you have made up your mind whether it was peace or weariness. Now, tonight, in the middle of an argument you have not settled. You are standing under no condemnation this evening, and an unsent card has never once been admitted as evidence against anybody. Romans 8:1 puts the verdict in Christ rather than in your own reasoning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who closes a court that a woman has been holding in her own kitchen.

Nothing here tells you to send one next year. Nothing here says the right card would have brought a reply, because that is not true and it would be cruel to suggest it. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reconciliation: the right to know that fourteen years were complete, and to stop cross-examining yourself about the fifteenth.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no silence can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my brother is His and always was.

  1. March with no card in it, you are not the day I stopped loving him and God never recorded you that way. Ecclesiastes 3:6 puts keeping and letting go in the same list without ranking either of them. In the name of Jesus I am done putting you on trial.
  2. Voice in the evening that says love does not get tired, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is at work in my brother today, and Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and never once said near to the tireless. I am his sister tonight, and I am carrying no case.
  3. Lord, You saw all fourteen of them go into the mail and You saw me standing in front of the heron in March. I thank You, because Your word says You see in secret and You have never once needed a fifteenth. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
