Safe And HeldPsalm 10:14

I Cannot Say the Word Out Loud

This message is for the man who is being harmed by his own grown son and cannot say the accurate word for it out loud, because saying the word would make his son a thing he cannot let his son be

He can get as far as describing it. That is not the problem. He could tell you what happened in March and again in July with the accuracy of a man reading off a gauge.

What he cannot do is say the word for it.

Because the word does not describe an event, it describes a person, and the person it would describe is his boy. Forty-one years old, and still, in that man's head, a boy in a red coat at a bus stop in 1993.

He has practiced it in the truck. He has got the shape of the sentence ready twice, once for his doctor and once for a man at church, and both times what came out was a version about tempers and a difficult patch and how it takes two.

And the third time he did not even try.

Here is what he has never said to anybody in this world: he is not protecting himself by not saying it. He is protecting a forty-one year old man from a word, and he knows exactly what that is costing him, and he cannot stop doing it.

Say the plain thing before anything else

This comes first on this page and it comes without softening.

Nothing here asks you to stay anywhere unsafe. Nothing here asks you to make peace with harm. There is no verse in Scripture and no line in this article that requires a man to hand himself over to be hurt, and being somebody's father does not create an exception.

If what is happening is dangerous, get safe first. Tell one real person who can actually do something: your doctor, the police if there is danger tonight, an elder abuse service or a domestic abuse service where you live, a social worker. You can do all of that without ever using the word. You can describe the events and let somebody else name them, and that is not cowardice, it is a completely legitimate route.

You are not required to absorb this, and being his father does not make it yours to take. That is not somebody being harsh about your son. Psalm 11:5 says the Lord's soul hates the one who loves violence, and it says it without exempting anybody's child, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing that in now to get a man help rather than to make him say a word.

God already has the word and did not wait for yours

Here is the thing that may be worth more to you than anything else on this page.

The word exists whether you say it or not. It is not conjured into being by your mouth. And more than that, the seeing of it does not depend on you either.

Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.Psalm 10:14

Thou hast seen it. Past tense, complete, before anybody reported anything. That psalm is written by somebody surrounded by people who are getting away with things, and the first thing he establishes is that God has already looked at it directly and has it recorded.

You are not the one who has to make this real by naming it, because it was seen in March and again in July and it is already written down. Psalm 10:14 puts the seeing in God rather than in your testimony, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that to a man in a truck who has practiced a sentence twice and could not get it out.

Naming an act is not naming a person

Here is the distinction you have been unable to find, and it is a real one and it is not a technicality.

You do not have to characterize your son in order to describe what happened. You can say what he did in March. You can say what he did in July. You can hand a doctor the facts in the flattest possible language and let the doctor do the categorizing, which is that person's job and not yours.

That is not evasion. It is the difference between reporting and pronouncing, and every one of us is entitled to leave the pronouncing to somebody else.

You are able to tell the truth without passing sentence on your own child, and those two were never the same task. Scripture puts the judging elsewhere in James 4:12, where there is one lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a father say what happened without having to say what his son is.

The breakthrough

Your son was never the whole of what is happening, and you know that better than anybody. There is a man in a red coat at a bus stop in 1993 in this too, and there is whatever went wrong in between, and none of it is simple.

But what is costing you now is not the complexity. It is that you have made your own access to help conditional on your willingness to say a word about your child, and nobody ever set that condition except you.

> The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. > Psalm 34:18

Nigh. Already close, without being fetched, without a report being filed. You are already stood beside by somebody who saw all of it in March and July, and the standing beside was never waiting on a word. Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness in God rather than in your account of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the standing beside in a truck where a man has been practicing a sentence he cannot say.

Nothing here tells you what to do about your son. This page does not know your situation and will not pretend to. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a plan: the word taken off your shoulders, and a route to help that does not run through your mouth.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are standing. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no love for your son can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame any man with how little he was carrying. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with my boy is His and always was.

  1. Word I cannot get out, you are already written down and God did not wait for me to say you. Psalm 10:14 says He has seen it and beholds it and has it in hand, and that was true in March before anybody told anybody. In the name of Jesus I am handing you over unsaid.
  2. Belief that getting help means condemning my own son, you have no authority in this truck. The Holy Spirit is the one who receives an account laid out flat, and James 4:12 says there is one lawgiver and it is not me. I am his father today, and I am describing and not pronouncing.
  3. Lord, You were there in March and You were there in July and You saw all of it directly. I thank You, because Your word says You are near to the broken hearted and You have never once required me to say a word about him. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and the one step in front of me is mine, and I am taking it today.
