Peace Worth MakingPsalm 34:14

Nobody Ever Heard His Own Sentence

This message is for the son who has translated his family to each other since he was twelve, across two languages and two tempers, and who realized at a birthday table that he has never once said a sentence of his own in that room

It was his niece's birthday and he was standing by the sink with a plate in each hand when it landed on him.

His uncle had said something across the table. Sharp, but not cruel, the way that uncle has always talked. And before it had finished traveling, he had already turned it over in his mouth and handed it to his mother in a softer shape, in the other language, with two words taken out of it and one word added.

He has been doing that since he was twelve. Two languages, two tempers, one boy in the middle who was good at it. Nobody appointed him. He was simply the one who understood both sides, and understanding both sides is how it became his.

So he stood there with the plates and did the arithmetic on it. Thousands of sentences. Thousands. Birthdays, funerals, hospital corridors, the year of the house, the argument about the car. All of them passed through him and came out gentler.

And here is the thing he has never said out loud in that kitchen: he could not name one sentence in thirty years that had been his own.

Somebody has been carrying every sentence

Let me name what you have been doing before a single ounce of it comes off you, because I doubt one person in that family has ever named it and it deserves to be said.

That table has stayed at one table because you keep it there. It runs on work nobody sees: which word to leave out, which to put in, which tone to file down before it reaches the person it was aimed at. You are doing simultaneous interpretation between two people who love each other and cannot hear each other, and you have been doing it since you were a child.

You are the reason that family still eats in one room, and not one of those thirty years was cowardice. That is not a compliment somebody is paying you. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and your labor of love, which means the whole of it was seen and kept rather than assumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to lift it off you and not to charge you with it.

But there is a second thing, and the psalm puts it in four verbs with nothing soft in them.

Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.Psalm 34:14

Seek it. Pursue it. Those are words for hunting. They are not words for holding something still. The psalm has peace out ahead of you as a thing to go after, which is a completely different posture from standing between two people with your hands out, keeping them apart so nothing breaks.

The blessing is on the maker

Keeping the peace costs the table nothing and costs the translator his own voice. That is the test, and it comes back the same answer every time.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Look at who that lands on. Not the ones who never made trouble. Not the ones who could handle both sides. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name and not a wage, which means the standing you have spent thirty years earning by softening other people's words was already given to you by a road you never had to walk.

You have that name on you today, and it was not issued for thirty years of interpreting and it is not withdrawn when you finally stop. Matthew 5:9 gives it as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds while you are standing at a sink with a plate in each hand.

A keeper carries the sentence. A maker sits down and says one.

Where your part ends

This must be plain rather than implied. Making peace is not the same as handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is in that family is not loud but dangerous, nothing here asks you to keep standing in the middle of it and be good at it. Get yourself safe. Tell one real person who can actually do something. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and no verse on this page is available to hold anybody in a room where they are being harmed.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.Nahum 1:7

A stronghold is a place with walls, and God is named as one in the written word. You are already inside something built, and the walls of it were never made out of how well you manage a room. Nahum 1:7 puts the safety in Him rather than in your interpreting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows the people who trust Him, which is knowledge that does not depend on you explaining yourself well.

The breakthrough

The sharp sentence was never the enemy. Your uncle talking the way he talks is your uncle telling the truth in the only register he has, and a family can survive that. What has been costing something is not the sharpness. It is that one man has been running every word of it through himself for thirty years and taking the friction on his own body.

You have a voice, and it was not given to you only for other people's words.

> There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. > Proverbs 12:18

Health. Not silence. The wise tongue in that verse is speaking, and what comes out of it heals. You have that tongue already, and it stopped being a tool for smoothing and started being a means of health the day Christ moved into you. Proverbs 12:18 puts healing in the speaking rather than in the withholding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the wisdom rather than leaving you to invent it between the table and the sink.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs your uncle to change, your mother to understand, or anybody at that table to notice one thing. What is being handed back is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know what you have actually been doing since you were twelve, and to stop calling it by the wrong name in your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and that table cannot hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little they were carrying. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with that family is His and always was.

  1. Translation, you are not peace and God never counted you as peace. Psalm 34:14 sends a man out after peace rather than leaving him standing between two people holding them apart, and this family is loved far too much to run through one boy forever. In the name of Jesus I am putting the plates down.
  2. Fear that the room falls apart the second I stop, you have no say at this table tonight. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the ones who softened every word. I am at this table as myself today, and I am not managing one person in this house.
  3. Lord, You have been in that kitchen since I was twelve years old and You never mistook my interpreting for peace. I thank You, because Your word says You have not forgotten one hour of it and You have not held it against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and the sentence in my mouth is mine, and I am going to say it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
