Off My Shoulders1 Peter 5:7

The Second Mother

This message is for the woman who raised her three younger brothers while their mother worked nights, and who at forty is still called Mama by three grown men with children of their own, and has never once been anybody's daughter in that house

Her youngest brother rang her at half past nine on a Tuesday about a letter he had opened and did not understand, and he opened the call the way all three of them always do. Hey Mama.

He is thirty-four. He has two children. He calls her Mama, and so do the other two, and they have done it since she was about twelve.

Their mother worked nights for eleven years, and somebody had to do the homework and the lunches and the shoes, and that somebody was the eldest, and the eldest was her. She got them raised. All three came out decent, employed and kind, and there is a photograph of the four of them at the middle one's wedding that she cannot look at without her eyes going.

But somewhere in the eleven years, the name changed. She stopped being their sister. And nobody in that family has ever once handed the post back, because there was never a ceremony for putting her in it either.

She got off the phone at ten past ten, sorted the letter out in her head, made a note to call the office in the morning, and then sat in the kitchen with the light off.

And here is the sentence she has never said out loud in her life: she has been somebody's mother since she was twelve years old, and she has never been anybody's daughter in that house.

Nobody ever gave a twelve year old a choice

Let me say this plainly before one gram of it comes off you, because I am fairly sure nobody in that family has ever said it, and it is owed.

You did not volunteer. A twelve year old cannot volunteer for a thing like that. She can only see what is not being done and start doing it, and you did, and it worked, and working is exactly how it stopped being a season and turned into who you are to those men.

Your mother was not wicked. She was working nights so that four people could eat. Everybody in that story was doing the only thing available. And still, a child carried something a child should never have to carry.

You are a woman who did a mother's work before she had finished being a girl, and not one hour of it was missed. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Psalm 56:8 says your tears are put in His bottle and your wanderings written in His book, which is an accounting kept for a girl nobody was keeping accounts for, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift a load off her rather than to add so much as a line.

And Peter, who knew what it was to be handed responsibility he had not asked for, writes it in seven words.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7

Casting is not laying down gently. It is a throwing word, the word you would use for a net going over the side of a boat. And the reason given is not that you are doing it wrong. The reason given is that He cares. The whole transfer is grounded in His affection rather than in your inadequacy.

Helping and holding are two different jobs

Helping is something you do and then finish. Holding is a post, and a post has no clocking off in it. Here is what separates them: when you leave a thing alone, does it actually break, or does it simply get handled later, worse, by somebody who is entirely capable of learning.

You have been reading later as never for twenty-eight years, and they were never the same word. Scripture puts the keeping in God's hands in Psalm 121:3, where the one who keeps you does not let your foot be moved and does not slumber, and the Holy Spirit is at work in all three of those men without a single call coming through your phone at half past nine.

That is not a redundancy notice. For a woman who has been on duty since middle school, it is the best news in the book.

Where your part ends

Let this be plain and not implied. Putting down a post is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody back into anything unsafe. If what is coming at you from that family is not merely heavy but dangerous, get yourself safe first, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace. There is no verse on this page that anybody can use to keep you where harm is.

He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.Psalm 62:6

Rock, salvation, defense. Three words for a shelter, and all three are Him. You are standing inside something you did not build, and the walls of it were never made out of how much you can hold for other people. Psalm 62:6 puts the defense in God rather than in your competence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman know that rather than merely agree with it.

The breakthrough

The phone call was never the enemy. A brother who rings his sister about a letter he does not understand is a brother who trusts her, and there is nothing broken in that.

What is costing you is not the sorting out. It is the name. It is that three grown men reach for you in the register of a child reaching for a parent, and that a woman who has held that register since she was twelve does not know how to be in that room any other way.

> Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. > Galatians 4:7

No more a servant. The verse does not say try to stop serving. It reports a change of standing that has already taken place. You are an heir in your Father's house right now, and that standing did not have to be earned by holding anybody up. Galatians 4:7 puts the change in what Christ has done rather than in what you can manage to put down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a daughter feel like a daughter, at whatever pace twenty-eight years unwinds.

Nothing here needs a conversation. Nothing here asks you to correct anybody's name for you, tell your brothers what you have seen, or announce a single change. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know that a girl was given a post she never agreed to, and to stop believing that the post is who she is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with those three men is His and always was.

  1. Post of second mother, you are handed over and God has already taken you. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast the whole of it on Him because He cares, and a twelve year old was never the person that care was supposed to come through. In the name of Jesus I am throwing you over the side.
  2. Fear that they will not manage without me, you have no authority in this kitchen tonight. The Holy Spirit is at work in all three of those men, and Psalm 121:3 says the one who keeps them does not so much as doze. I am in this family as a sister today, and I am not mothering one grown person in it.
  3. Lord, You were in that house through eleven years of nights and You saw a girl doing a woman's job. I thank You, because Your word says You kept every tear of it and You have never handed me a bill. Whatever You do with those three is Yours, and I am Your daughter, and tonight that is the only name I am answering to.
