The Boy Who Carried the Message

This message is for the eldest son who was sent between his parents with messages from the age of eight, and who at thirty-eight is still the only working line of communication in a family of nine adults

He was eight the first time. His mother said, go and tell your father the food is ready, and he went, and he came back, and what he brought back was not exactly what had been said.

He had softened it. Nobody taught him to. He was eight and he could feel the shape of the room and he made an adjustment on the way through the door, and the meal went well, and he understood something about himself that afternoon that he has never been able to unlearn.

Thirty years on, there are nine adults in that family and not one of them speaks directly to another one about anything that matters. It all comes through him. His aunt tells him what she thinks of the arrangements and he passes on a version. His father asks after his brother and he answers with a summary. He does this in three phone calls a week and he is very good at it and everybody is grateful.

Last month somebody said, without meaning anything by it, that he is the glue in this family. And he laughed and said something modest, and then he sat in his car outside his own house for eleven minutes and did not go in.

Because here is the sentence that has never been said out loud in that family: nobody ever gave him the job. He was eight. There was no conversation. He simply started carrying, and everyone else simply stopped.

No one appointed you

Try, seriously, to remember the day. The conversation, the room, the moment when a grown adult sat you down and asked you to be the line that nine people would run their lives through.

There is not one. There never was. A job that arrives without a conversation cannot be resigned in one either, which is exactly why you are still holding it at thirty-eight, and why every attempt to think your way out of it ends in the same place.

You are not holding this because you are weak, and you were carrying something no eight year old should have been handed. Do not read that as flattery. Psalm 27:10 says that when father and mother fail, the Lord takes you up, which is a verse written about exactly the kind of gap a child steps into, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it now to lift a weight rather than to add a line to the account.

And Paul, in a letter about carrying things, is careful enough to say two different things in the space of five verses.

For every man shall bear his own burden.Galatians 6:5

Two verses earlier he tells the church to bear one another's burdens, and then he says this, and the two are not a contradiction. One is a crisis: a man goes down and you get under it with him. The other is the ordinary weight of a life, and it belongs to the one living it. What you have been doing for thirty years is not the first thing. It is nine adults handing you the second thing, three calls a week.

The difference between helping and holding

Helping is something you do and then stop doing. Holding is a post, and a post has no end in it. You can tell them apart by one question: if you put it down, does anything actually break, or does it simply get loud.

You have been mistaking loud for broken your entire adult life, and the two were never the same thing. The written word is clear that God does not need a middleman to reach a family, since 1 Timothy 2:5 puts one mediator between God and men and it is not you, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in each of those nine people without an appointment being made through your phone.

That verse is not a demotion. It is the most freeing sentence a wire has ever been handed.

Where your part ends

This gets said plainly and not implied. Putting a job down is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks you back into anything unsafe. If what runs through you is not just difficult but dangerous, get yourself safe first, tell one real person who can actually do something, and know that safety is not a failure of peace. There is not a verse on this page available to hold anybody in reach of harm.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Cast is not a gentle word. It is a throwing word. You are held up by Him rather than by your own arrangements, and that sustaining does not wobble the week you stop relaying messages. Psalm 55:22 puts the sustaining in God rather than in your usefulness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the steadying while a man works out how to stop.

The breakthrough

The messages were never the problem. Families need to talk and yours does not know how, and a boy of eight found a way to make dinner happen.

What has to change is not your kindness. It is one small thing: the assumption, so old you have never seen it, that if the message does not go through you it does not go at all.

> Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. > Matthew 11:28

Heavy laden. Loaded up. The word is about a weight somebody put on you rather than one you chose. You are invited to come as you are, carrying it, and the rest in that verse is given rather than earned by getting free first. Matthew 11:28 makes the giving His action rather than yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual lifting, at whatever speed a thirty year habit lifts.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here asks you to announce a change, set a boundary out loud, or tell one person in that family what you have understood. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know that nobody appointed you, and to stop believing you agreed to this.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family can issue it or withdraw it. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little they had. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with all nine of them is His and always was.

  1. Message that is not mine, you are going nowhere in my hands today. Galatians 6:5 gives every person their own load to carry, and I have been carrying eight of them since I was a child. In the name of Jesus I am setting you down where you stand.
  2. Fear that this family falls apart the day I stop, you have no authority over me tonight. The Holy Spirit is at work in every one of them without going through my phone, and 1 Timothy 2:5 names one mediator and it has never been me. I am in this family as a son today, and I am not the wire.
  3. Lord, You were in that doorway when I was eight and You have been in every call since. I thank You, because Your word says You take up what a mother and father let fall, and You have never once billed me for the carrying. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are empty tonight.
