His Name Is Still in My Prayers

Eight years. Every morning, at the same point, in the same chair.

At the beginning it took a while. There were whole mornings that were just him, sometimes with weeping in them, and she remembers those years as difficult and also as somehow full.

Now it takes about four seconds. His name, and then the same short sentence she has said for a long time, and then she moves on to the rest.

She noticed it properly in February, and she has been unhappy about it since. Not guilty exactly. Something quieter and more corrosive: the suspicion that what began as intercession has become the verbal equivalent of a light switch she flicks on the way past.

She has tried to make it slower a few times. It felt performed, which was worse.

And here is what she has never said to anybody, and has barely said to God: she cannot tell whether eight years of that name every morning is faithfulness, or whether she is a woman who wore a groove into something and now walks it because her feet know the way.

Look at what four seconds actually is

Let me describe the situation before it gets judged, because the judging has been going on since February and it has not produced anything.

For eight years, every single morning, without a result, without encouragement, without anybody knowing, you have said one name to God. Nobody has ever thanked you. There has been nothing to show for it, ever, and you have not stopped.

Two thousand nine hundred and something mornings. And what troubles you about it is that it has become easy.

You are looking at eight years of unbroken faithfulness and calling it a problem because it stopped being hard. Do not read that as flattery. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which covers every one of those four second mornings, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to settle a woman rather than to ask her to try harder.

And Jesus, teaching about persistence in prayer, frames it in a way that answers this directly.

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.Luke 18:1

Always to pray, and not to faint. The alternative He names is not lukewarmness. It is fainting, which is stopping altogether.

The parable He goes on to tell is about a woman who keeps coming, repeatedly, with the same request, and there is not one word in it about how she felt while she did it. The commendation is entirely about the fact that she kept turning up.

A worn path is not the same as a cold heart

Here is what has actually happened, and it is not a decline.

A thing said every day for eight years wears smooth. That is what repetition does to language, and it happens to the Lord's Prayer, and it happens to a wedding vow said on an anniversary, and it happens to a name said in a chair every morning.

Smooth is not the same as empty. A path worn through a field is worn because somebody has walked it thousands of times, and the wearing is evidence rather than erosion.

You have a path worn into eight years of mornings, and the wear on it is the proof rather than the problem. Scripture puts the value in the continuing in Galatians 6:9, where the promise attaches to not fainting rather than to intensity, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is described as making intercession with groanings that have no words in them at all.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Praying for somebody is never the same as owing them anything, and nothing here asks anybody to hold a door open into harm. If there is a reason distance between you is right, then the name can be said every morning from four hundred miles away and no door has to open at all. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, always.

And this too, plainly. Nothing here says the prayer will be answered the way you have been hoping. Nobody knows that and any article that promised it would be lying to a woman on her two thousand and ninth morning.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7

Because He cares. That is the entire reason given, and notice that it is a statement about His disposition rather than about your fervency. You are casting something onto somebody who is described as caring, and the caring is His and has never once depended on how long you took over it. 1 Peter 5:7 puts the reason in His affection rather than in your performance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who receives four seconds the same as He received the difficult years.
