Off My ShouldersLuke 12:14

Nobody Ever Voted

This message is for the woman who has chaired every decision in her family since she was fifteen, who was never elected to it and cannot resign from it, and who has just been handed a decision about an uncle's care that was never hers to make

The message came in on the family thread at twenty to eight on a Thursday, and it was addressed to nobody and it was addressed to her.

Their uncle needs more help at home than he is getting. That was the whole message. No question mark. Seven relatives on that thread, four of them closer to him than she is, two of them retired.

She read it twice, and then she put the phone down and went and stood at the window, because she could feel it starting. The mental list. Who to ring. What to find out. Which cousin will say yes and which will go quiet. By the time the kettle boiled she had a plan, and nobody had asked her for one.

She has been doing this since she was fifteen, when her parents divorced and somebody had to work out where everybody was going for Christmas. She did it well. She has done every one since. Weddings, funerals, the year of the house sale, the difficult business with her nephew.

There has never been a vote. Nobody ever proposed her. She is simply, permanently, the chair of a committee that has no minutes and never adjourns.

And here is what she has not said to a single person on that thread: she is being handed a decision about a man's care that is not hers to make, and the reason it landed on her is that it always does.

There was never a vote

Try to find the meeting. Genuinely. The day, the room, the moment when seven adults sat down and agreed that one of them would carry the whole family's decisions from now on.

There is no such meeting anywhere in your history, which is the exact reason there has never been one to end it either. Roles that arrive without appointment cannot be resigned from by ordinary means, and that is why every attempt to step back has felt like abandoning people.

You are not in that chair because you are controlling, and you were fifteen when a gap opened and somebody had to stand in it. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Psalm 27:10 says that when a father and mother fall short, the Lord takes you up, which is a verse about the very hole a teenager climbs into, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to lift something rather than to add anything to your account.

And Jesus, handed a family dispute by somebody who assumed He would settle it, answers with a question.

And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?Luke 12:14

A man in a crowd wants Him to sort out an inheritance between him and his brother. It is a real problem and the man is not being unreasonable. And Jesus declines, out loud, in public, by asking who appointed Him. He does not say the problem does not matter. He says it was not handed to Him.

If He can ask that question, so can a woman on a Thursday night with a kettle boiling.

Caring and deciding are two different jobs

Caring is something you feel and act on and it belongs to everybody in a family. Deciding is a chair, and a chair carries the weight of every outcome that follows. The two get confused constantly, and the confusion is the whole trap: because you care, you decide, and because you decide, you are responsible, and because you are responsible you can never stop.

You are free to care about your uncle and not be the one who decides about him, and those two were never joined at the hip. Scripture separates them plainly in Romans 14:12, where every one of us shall give account of himself to God, which puts each of those seven adults in charge of their own answer, and the Holy Spirit is at work in all of them right now without anything having to go through a family thread.

That is not you being pushed out. For a woman who has been chairing since she was fifteen, it is the first sentence in years that sounds like air.

Where your part ends

Let this be plain rather than implied. Stepping out of a role is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody back into anything unsafe. If what is being asked of you is not merely unfair but dangerous, get yourself safe first, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold on to this: being safe is not a failure of peace. No verse on this page is available to keep anybody where harm is being done.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.Psalm 91:4

Covered, and by something that was not built by you. You are already under a covering, and it did not go up on the day you started running things for everybody. Psalm 91:4 puts the shelter in God rather than in your competence at organizing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold for a woman standing at a dark window with a phone lighting up behind her.

The breakthrough

The message was never the enemy. Your uncle does need more help, and somebody noticing that is a good thing, and a family that talks about it at all is doing better than many.

What is costing you is not the caring. It is the reflex underneath it, laid down when you were fifteen: that a need seen by you is a need assigned to you.

> Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. > Romans 14:4

To his own master. Every adult in that thread stands before somebody who is not you. You are released from carrying outcomes that belong to other people, and that release was written down long before you were handed anything. Romans 14:4 puts each person under their own master rather than under your management, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to read a message and not immediately start a list.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here asks you to reply to the thread, announce a boundary, or tell one relative what you have worked out. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know that there was never a vote, and to stop living as though there had been.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family thread can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with all seven of them is His and always was.

  1. Chair I was never elected to, you are empty tonight and God is not asking me back into you. Luke 12:14 has Jesus Himself asking who appointed Him over somebody's family business, and nobody ever appointed me either. In the name of Jesus I am standing up out of you.
  2. Fear that nothing gets decided if I do not decide it, you have no authority over me this evening. The Holy Spirit is at work in all seven of them, and Romans 14:12 says every one of us gives our own account and not each other's. I am in this family as myself today, and I am not chairing one thing in it.
  3. Lord, You were there when I was fifteen and the whole arrangement fell to a girl who did not know any better. I thank You, because Your word says You take up what a father and mother let fall, and You have never once billed me for standing in the gap. Whatever You do about my uncle is Yours, and this chair is empty, and I am on my feet.
