Off My ShouldersIsaiah 46:4

The Job She Was Given at Nine

This message is for the woman who was handed four younger children at nine years old and told to see to them, and who at sixty-four still cannot let one family gathering be somebody else's to run

She was nine years old and her mother said, see to the others, and then went out to work, and that was the whole handover.

Four of them. The youngest was two. She got them fed and she got them to school and she got them into bed, and on the days it did not go well she thought it was because of something she had not done properly. There was nobody to tell her otherwise. She was nine.

She is sixty-four now. Her mother has been gone eleven years. Those four are grown, with houses and children and opinions, and every single one of them is perfectly capable.

And at every gathering, she is the one who arrives first with the food. She is the one who notices the chair leg. She is the one who knows which grandchild does not eat that and which one has to be sat away from which one. She cannot help it. Her hands start before her head does.

Last Thanksgiving her niece said, gently and with love, aunt, sit down, we have got it. And she sat down for about ninety seconds and then got up to check the oven that her niece had already checked.

And here is the thing she has never said out loud in sixty-four years: she does not know how to be at a table she is not running, and she is starting to think she never learned because nobody ever let her be nine.

Nobody gave a child a choice

Let me say the true thing plainly before an ounce comes off you, because I doubt one person in that family has ever said it, and it is owed to you.

You did not take that on. It was set down on you, at nine, by an adult who was doing the best she could in a very hard spot, and you did not have the standing to say no even if it had occurred to you. What you did with it was remarkable. Four children got raised, and they got raised by a child, and every one of them is fine.

You are somebody who did a grown woman's work at nine years old, and not one hour of it went unseen. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Psalm 56:8 says God puts your tears in His bottle and writes your wanderings in His book, which is an accounting kept for a child nobody was keeping accounts for, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to take a weight off rather than to add anything to it.

And here is the second thing, and Isaiah says it in the voice of somebody with the whole load already in His arms.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.Isaiah 46:4

Four times in one verse. Bear, carry, carry, deliver. God is not offering to help you lift. He is telling you what He has been doing the entire time, including through 1971, including through the winter the youngest had the fever, including through every hour you thought the whole thing rested on a nine year old.

Helping is not the same as holding

Helping is a thing you do and then stop doing. Holding is a post, and a post never lets go of you. There is one question that tells them apart: if you let it be, does something break, or does it just get done differently than you would have done it.

You have been reading differently as wrongly your whole life, and they were never the same thing. It stands written in Psalm 127:1 that unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain, which puts the actual construction in His hands rather than in yours, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in all four of those grown people for decades without waiting on your say-so.

That is not being pushed aside. For a woman who has been in charge since she was a child, it is the kindest sentence in the book.

Where your part ends

Say this plain and do not dress it up. Putting a job down is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing on this page asks anybody to go back to anything unsafe. If what is in that family is not merely tiring but dangerous, get yourself safe first, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold on to this: being safe is not a failure of peace. There is no verse here that anybody can use to keep you where harm is.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.Psalm 61:2

Higher than I. That is the whole request. You are standing on something taller than your own capability, and it was never your own strength holding that family up. Psalm 61:2 puts the rock above the one who is asking rather than under her feet as a thing she built, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the leading, at whatever pace an old habit will move.

The breakthrough

The seeing-to was never the trouble. A woman who notices the chair leg is a gift to any family, and every one of those four grew up under something steady because of it.

What has to change is not your care. It is one sentence sitting underneath all of it, so old you have never held it up to the light: that if you are not running the room, the room is not being run.

> Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. > Galatians 5:1

Made us free. Past tense, finished, done by Him. You are free already, and the freedom was not issued on the day you finally managed to sit still for more than ninety seconds. Galatians 5:1 puts the liberty in what Christ has done rather than in what you can manage, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unpicks a knot tied in 1971, patiently, at whatever speed it comes.

Nothing here needs a conversation. Nothing here asks you to explain yourself to your niece, tell your brothers anything, or announce that you are changing. What is being handed back is smaller and a great deal heavier than a resolution: the right to know that a child was given a job she never agreed to, and to stop believing the job is still hers.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are standing. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little they had. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a woman's faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with those four is His and always was.

  1. Job I was given at nine, you are handed back and God is the one taking you. Isaiah 46:4 has Him bearing and carrying and delivering, all three of them His own verbs, and He was doing every one of them in that house while a child thought it was her. In the name of Jesus I am putting you down.
  2. Fear that if I sit still something falls apart, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit has been at work in all four of them for fifty years, and Psalm 127:1 says the house is built by the Lord and not by the one who never sits down. I am at this table as myself today, and I am not running one thing in this room.
  3. Lord, You were in that house when I was nine and there was nobody else to be. I thank You, because Your word says my tears were kept and my wanderings written down, and You have never once handed me a bill for any of it. Whatever You do with those four is Yours, and this chair is mine, and I am sitting in it.
