The Room Without the Job

It happened in the third hymn, which is not where she expected anything to happen.

She was standing there with the book open, not really singing, and the person in front of her had a coat with a loose thread on the shoulder, and she found herself planning how she would mention it kindly at the end without embarrassing them.

And then, out of nowhere, a whole sentence arrived in her: I have been doing this since I was six.

She sat down for the rest of it. Nobody noticed. She sat there and went back through her life the way you would go through a drawer, and it was in everything. Six years old, standing at the top of the stairs, working out from the sound of the television downstairs what kind of mood her mother was in and whether tonight was a night to ask about anything.

Forty-two now. Her mother is elderly and gentle and has not been difficult in twenty years.

And she is still doing it. In the church hall afterward she caught herself scanning the room for who was on their own, who looked tired, which two people should not be left talking. It is not kindness at that speed. It is a post.

And here is the sentence she has never said to anybody: she tried, standing in that hall with a cup of tea going cold, to picture herself in a room with nothing at all to manage, and she could not see the woman. She simply was not there.

A job nobody wrote down

Let me say the true thing before an ounce of it comes off you, because I doubt it has ever been said to you.

A six year old at the top of the stairs is not being manipulative and she is not being unusually caring. She is doing the only available piece of engineering in a house where the weather comes from somebody else. She reads the room because reading the room is the only lever within reach.

That child did well. She got herself and probably other people through years of something, using a skill nobody taught her and nobody thanked her for.

You are not broken for having learned it, and you were six years old and doing the best available thing. Nobody is being kind to you here. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, which is language for exactly what a house like that does to a small child, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it now to lift something rather than to hand you one more thing to carry.

And here is the second thing, and the psalm puts it in a strange and beautiful tense.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.Psalm 139:16

Written before there was anything to write about. That is what the verse claims. There is a version of you recorded in His book that predates the stairs, predates the job, predates the whole arrangement by which you became useful.

Which means the woman you could not picture in that hall is not missing. She is simply older than the job, and you have never met her because the job started early.

Kindness and duty are two different things

Kindness is a thing you choose, and then it is over, and you feel warm about it. Duty is a post, and a post is never finished, and it does not feel warm, it feels like relief when it goes well and dread when it does not.

Here is the test, and it is unkind but it is accurate: could you not do it. Genuinely, could you sit in that hall and not scan.

You have been on permanent duty in ordinary rooms for thirty-six years, and not one of those rooms ever put you on shift. Matthew 6:26 says that the birds neither sow nor reap and the Father feeds them, which is an argument built entirely on how much less arranging is required than we think, and the Holy Spirit is already at work in every person in that hall without you noticing who is on their own.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Putting a job down is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody back into anything unsafe. If the room you are reading is one where reading it keeps you safe, your instinct is working and nothing here overrides it. If what is in your family is dangerous, get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace.

I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.Psalm 142:5

Refuge and portion. A place to be, and a thing you are given. You are both sheltered and provided for, and neither of those was ever contingent on you knowing who in the room needs watching. Psalm 142:5 puts the refuge in God rather than in your vigilance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to sit inside it rather than merely believe in it.
