Courage To BeginMatthew 6:4

Nobody Is Going to See This

This message is for the woman whose first step has to be taken toward somebody who will never know she took it, and who has discovered that what she actually wanted was for the going first to be witnessed by somebody

The thing itself is small. That is what makes it strange.

She has to stop doing something. There is a small, precise, entirely invisible act of withdrawal she has to perform, a thing she does at every family gathering that keeps a certain temperature going, and she has known for three months exactly what it is and exactly how to stop.

Nobody will notice. That is the whole problem. There is no version of this where anybody in that family looks up and sees that she went first. There will be no thank you, no acknowledgment, and no moment where anybody understands that a nine year situation shifted because one woman stopped doing one thing at Christmas.

She caught herself last week composing a message to her friend about it. Just to tell somebody. Just so it would be on record somewhere that she had done it.

And that is when she saw the thing she has never said out loud to anybody: she would have done it three months ago if she had known one person would see.

The wanting is not the problem you think it is

Let me put this down gently and squarely, because there is a harsh version of this teaching and it does not help anybody.

Wanting to be seen is not vanity. It is one of the oldest and most ordinary human needs there is, and it is not a defect installed by pride. A person who has been going first for years without acknowledgment does not become greedy for a witness. She becomes hungry for one, and hunger is not a moral failure.

And you have spotted it yourself. Nobody had to tell you. You caught yourself composing the message and you understood immediately what it meant, which is a form of honesty most people never manage.

You are not being small here, and the need to be witnessed is one God built into people rather than one you invented. Do not read that as flattery. Genesis 16:13 has a woman alone in a desert naming God as the One who sees her, and that name is in the book because being seen is a real thing that people need, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to meet it rather than to correct you for it.

And Jesus, teaching about the things nobody watches, says something worth reading very slowly.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:4

Read who is in the room. Not nobody. Him. The whole point of that verse is not that hidden things go unwitnessed, it is that they are witnessed by the only one whose seeing actually settles anything.

There is no such thing as an unwitnessed act of peacemaking. There is only one where the witness is Him rather than your friend.

Being unseen and being alone are not the same thing

You will do this on your own. Nobody in that family will look up, and there will not be a moment.

But alone and unwitnessed are different words, and the difference is the entire subject of that verse.

You are already accompanied in the exact moment you had been dreading doing on your own, and the accompanying is not a consolation prize for the thank you that will not come. Scripture puts it plainly in Hebrews 13:5, where He has said He will never leave you nor forsake you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a room at Christmas where nothing visible happens at all.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Going first is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If the thing you are withdrawing from is protecting you rather than maintaining a temperature, then keep doing it, and let no line here be used to push you. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.

And this too: nothing here requires a conversation. The step at the bottom of the page involves saying nothing to anybody at all, which is precisely why it is hard.

Thou God seest me.Genesis 16:13

Four words, spoken in a desert by a woman with no standing and nobody to complain to. You are seen right now by the same one she named, and He was in that hall long before anybody noticed you were doing anything. Genesis 16:13 puts the seeing in God rather than in the room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a woman who has been quietly reaching for a witness.

The breakthrough

Your family was never the enemy. Nobody in that room is withholding a thank you out of meanness. They genuinely will not know, because the thing you are stopping has been invisible from the outside for nine years.

What is costing you is not the act. It is that you have been waiting to be paid in acknowledgment, and that payment has never once been available in this situation and never will be.

> Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. > Matthew 5:9

Read what is offered and read what is not. Not thanks. Not recognition. Not a single person understanding. A name, given by Christ, on the makers. You are already called that, and the name was not withheld pending anybody at that gathering noticing you. Matthew 5:9 hands out a family name rather than applause, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is exactly the witness you have been looking for in a text message.

Nothing here tells you to do it today, and no date appears anywhere on this page. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than acknowledgment: the discovery that the room you thought was empty has somebody in it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no room can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that family is His and always was.

  1. Need for somebody to see it, you are ordinary and God has never held you against me. Matthew 6:4 puts the Father in the room where nobody else is looking, and it never once called the hidden thing unwitnessed. In the name of Jesus I am taking my payment from Him.
  2. Fear that unnoticed means wasted, you have no authority over this Christmas. The Holy Spirit is at work in every person in that family, and 1 Corinthians 15:58 says the labor is not in vain in the Lord. I am in that room as myself, and I am not waiting to be thanked.
  3. Lord, You were in that hall for nine years of gatherings and You have seen every single thing I did that nobody noticed. I thank You, because Your word says You see in secret and a woman in a desert once named You the God who sees her. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and this act is mine, and it is Yours.
