The Table SetHebrews 6:19

Two Cups on the Study Table

This message is for the man who has set out two cups and two chairs at his study table every week for twelve years for a friend who stopped coming, and who has begun to wonder whether twelve years makes a practice into an eccentricity

Thursday nights, the same hour, for nineteen years, and for the last twelve of them he has been on his own.

They read together. That was the whole arrangement. Two men, a table, a lamp, two cups, and whatever they were working through that year, and it went on for seven years and it was the best hour of his week.

Then his friend stopped believing, all at once and then not at once, over about a year, and the Thursdays got harder and then got awkward and then stopped.

And he has kept setting out two cups.

He fills one. The other one sits there, dry, on the far side of the table, and at the end of the evening he puts it back in the cupboard with the clean ones.

Twelve years of that. Nobody has ever seen it. He lives alone and nobody comes in on a Thursday.

And here is what he has never said to a living soul, though he has come close in prayer twice: he is not sure at what number a practice becomes an eccentricity, and he has begun to suspect he passed it a long way back.

Take the question seriously

Let me not brush past it, because you have asked a precise question and it deserves a precise answer rather than a warm one.

Is there a number at which this becomes eccentricity? Here is a better test than a number, and it is one you can run tonight.

Does it cost anybody anything? It costs your friend nothing, because he does not know. It costs nobody in your life anything, because nobody sees it. It costs you about four seconds and one cup that goes back in the cupboard clean.

Has it changed anything you would otherwise do? It has not. You would be at that table on a Thursday with a book regardless. The second cup has not kept you from one thing in twelve years.

An eccentricity distorts a life. This has not distorted anything.

You are keeping a small thing that has cost nobody a thing, and twelve years has not converted it into a symptom. That is not somebody being generous about a cup. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off, which includes the thought behind a second cup at a table where nobody has ever seen it, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to answer the question rather than to leave you with it.

What an anchor actually is

Here is a picture worth having, because it is the one Scripture uses for exactly this.

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.Hebrews 6:19

An anchor is not a thing that gets used. That is the whole point of it. An anchor sits there, doing nothing visible, for as long as the ship is in that water, and the entire value of it is that it is down and holding while nothing appears to be happening.

Nobody looks at an anchor after twelve years and says it has become an eccentricity. It is doing exactly what an anchor does.

And notice where the writer says this one is fastened: within the veil, which is to say the far end of it is not in your house at all. It is somewhere else entirely, in a place you cannot see, held by somebody you are not.

You are holding the near end of something whose far end is fastened where you cannot see it, and the holding is not an eccentricity, it is what an anchor looks like from the deck. Hebrews 6:19 puts the fastening inside the veil rather than in your study, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps the line taut for twelve years without anything visible occurring.

Keeping and pressing are two different things

Your friend has never known. In twelve years there has been no message about it, no photograph, nothing mentioned to a mutual friend who might carry it back, and no version of a Thursday invitation issued and declined.

Which means that in twelve years it has never once functioned as pressure on a man who left the faith and probably expects pressure from people like you.

You are keeping a place in the one form that could never be experienced by him as a demand, and that is a considerable kindness rather than a quirk. Scripture puts the posture in Matthew 6:6, where a room is shut and the Father who sees in secret is the only audience, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a private practice from turning into a performance.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Keeping a place is never the same as owing somebody access, and nothing here asks anybody to hold anything open into harm. If there is a reason that friendship should not resume, the cup can go on being set out and the door can stay shut. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, always.

And this too, plainly. Nothing here says he is coming back, to that table or to the faith. Nobody knows that and any page that promised it would be lying to a man who has washed a clean cup six hundred times.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised.Hebrews 10:23

He is faithful that promised. The faithfulness belongs to God in that sentence and the holding fast belongs to you, and neither of them is a prediction about a man. You are holding on to somebody faithful rather than to an expected outcome, and only one of those two has ever been in your hands. Hebrews 10:23 puts the faithfulness in Him rather than in the situation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the holding, Thursday after Thursday, in a house where nobody comes.

The breakthrough

Your friend was never the enemy, and neither was what happened to him. A man losing his faith over the course of a year is a grief and not a betrayal, and you have never once treated it as one, which is why he has never had a single message from you about it.

What is costing you is not the cup. It is that you have begun to grade your own practice, and the grading has no marks available on it, and it has been running quietly on Thursday nights for a while now.

> For we walk by faith, not by sight. > 2 Corinthians 5:7

Not by sight. Which means that the absence of anything visible after twelve years is the ordinary condition rather than the verdict. You are walking the way the written word describes as normal, and the lack of anything to look at is written into the definition. 2 Corinthians 5:7 puts sight outside the arrangement rather than inside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the walking in a study on a Thursday with one dry cup on the table.

Nothing here tells you to keep setting it out and nothing here tells you to stop. Both are entirely yours. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than an answer: the grading closed, and an anchor named for what it is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own table was given to you, and no twelve years can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my friend is His and always was.

  1. Second cup on this table, you are not an eccentricity and God never named you one. Hebrews 6:19 calls hope an anchor of the soul, and an anchor is a thing that sits down there holding while nothing visible happens at all. In the name of Jesus I am setting you out again.
  2. Grading that has been running on Thursday nights, you have no authority in this study. The Holy Spirit understands the thought behind a cup nobody has ever seen, and 2 Corinthians 5:7 says we walk by faith and not by sight and puts the lack of anything to look at inside the definition. I am here as myself tonight, and I am not being marked.
  3. Lord, You have been at this table for nineteen years, the seven with him and the twelve without. I thank You, because Your word fastens the far end of my hope inside the veil where I cannot see it and You hold it there. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and I set the table, and You decide who sits.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
