You Are Always Welcome

She has said it seven times. Once a year, roughly, without planning it that way.

Never as a campaign. Never twice in a month. Just, at some point in most years, at the end of an ordinary message about something else, one sentence: you are always welcome here.

He has never responded to it. He responds to the rest of the message sometimes. Never to that.

And this year, drafting the ordinary message about something else, she got to the end and stopped, and she sat looking at it for about a minute, and then she did not add the sentence.

She has been uneasy ever since. Not because she thinks it was wrong to leave it out. Because she cannot tell any more what the sentence is.

Seven times, over seven years, to a man who has never once acknowledged it. At what point does an open door stop being an invitation and turn into a small annual weight placed on somebody's shoulders?

And here is what she has never said to anybody: she does not want to be a woman who is pressing, and she has no way of knowing whether she has become one.

The question is a good one and it deserves an answer

Let me not wave this away, because it is a serious question and it is being asked by somebody who is genuinely trying to be honest.

Here is the test, and it is not a feeling, it is a mechanism. An invitation places no obligation. A bill does. The difference is not in the words, it is in what happens if the other person does nothing.

So run it. What has happened to him, in seven years, each time he did not respond to that sentence? Nothing. No follow up. No second message asking whether he had seen it. No mention of it to anybody else in the family who might carry it back. No cooling in the ordinary parts of the messages afterward.

That is an invitation. A bill accrues, and this one never has.

You are not pressing and you never have been, and the mechanism proves it rather than your feeling about it. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Psalm 139:1 says He has searched you and known you, which means the actual motive underneath seven sentences is fully visible to Him and always has been, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising this now to settle a woman rather than to make her examine herself further.

What God is described as doing while He waits

Here is a picture worth having, because it answers the specific fear.

And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.Isaiah 30:18

Therefore will the Lord wait. That is a strange and enormous sentence. God, described as waiting, and the reason given is not that He is stuck. The reason is that He may be gracious.

There is no anxiety anywhere in that verse. There is no accruing. He is not counting the years and He is not adding it up, and the waiting is described as an expression of grace rather than as a state of suspension.

You are doing something the written word attributes to God Himself, and Scripture puts no anxiety in it at all. Isaiah 30:18 puts waiting inside grace rather than inside pressure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman recognize her own practice in a description of His.

Leaving it out this year was also fine

Notice what has not happened. You did not add the sentence this year and the door did not close.

The door is not made out of the sentence. The door is the fact that he would be welcome, which is true whether it gets said in a given year or not.

You are not obliged to say it annually in order for it to be true, and skipping a year has not withdrawn anything. Scripture puts the standing in the reality rather than in the announcement in 1 Corinthians 13:7, where charity bears all things and endures all things, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a thing true in a year when it goes unsaid.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Keeping a door open is never the same as owing somebody access, and nothing here asks anybody to hold a door open into harm. If there is a reason he should not come, the sentence can stay unsaid permanently and the door can stay shut, and there is no contradiction in it. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, always.

And this too, said plainly. Nothing here says he is coming. Nobody knows that, and an article that promised it would be lying to a woman who has written that sentence seven times.

Blessed are all they that wait for him.Isaiah 30:18

The blessing in that verse lands on the waiting rather than on the arrival. You are inside the blessing right now, seven years in, with nothing to show anybody. Isaiah 30:18 attaches the blessing to the posture rather than to the outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in a woman looking at a half written message.
