The Table SetRomans 5:5

Two Sets of Gloves on the Bench

This message is for the man who has kept a second pair of work gloves on the bench in his garage for six years in case a son ever comes out to help, and who has never once mentioned them to anybody

They are on the left-hand end of the bench, under the good light, and they have been there for six years.

He bought them at the same time as his own pair, at a place out on the bypass, because there was an offer and because at the time it seemed like the sort of thing you do. His boy had said something about coming out and giving him a hand with the truck, in the vague way people say things.

That was six years ago.

The gloves have never been worn. They have moved twice, once for a shelf and once when he redid the whole wall, and both times he put them straight back under the good light.

Nobody has ever asked about them. His wife has certainly noticed, because she notices everything, and she has never said a word, which he is grateful for in a way he cannot explain.

And here is what he has never said out loud to anybody: about twice a year, usually in the winter, he looks at them and feels foolish, and the feeling lasts about a day and then goes, and he has never once come close to putting them in a drawer.

Name what the gloves are

Let me say what that is before anything gets said about it, because I doubt anybody has ever described it back to you.

That is a place kept ready. It is one of the oldest human things there is and it has almost no other expression left in a modern life. You cannot leave a light burning in a window on a road with streetlights. You cannot keep a horse fed. What you can do is buy a second pair of gloves and put them under the good light and not move them.

It costs nothing. It asks nobody for anything. It has never once been mentioned to the person it is for, which means it has never functioned as pressure on him even by accident.

You are doing something quiet and entirely uncoercive, and six years of it has not made you foolish. Do not read that as flattery. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which covers a bench under a work light, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to name it rather than to talk you into anything.

And Paul writes about hope in a way that answers the winter feeling directly.

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.Romans 5:5

Maketh not ashamed. That phrase is doing exactly the work you need it to do. It is about the specific fear that hoping for something makes a person look ridiculous, and Paul says plainly that this particular hope does not do that to anybody.

Keeping something ready is not the same as waiting badly

There is a version of waiting that eats a person. It counts. It checks. It sends a message every few months that is not about anything and is about everything.

That is not what is on that bench. The gloves do not count anything. They have never been used to make anybody feel a thing. They sit under a light in a garage and nobody but you and God knows they are for somebody.

You are keeping rather than pressing, and the two look nothing alike from the inside of a garage. Scripture puts the difference plainly in 1 Corinthians 13:4, where charity suffers long and is kind and is not puffed up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a long thing from turning into a grievance while it goes on.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Keeping a place ready is never the same as owing somebody access, and nothing here asks anybody to keep a door open into harm. If there is a reason the distance between you and your son is protective, then the gloves can stay on the bench and the door can stay shut, and there is no contradiction in that. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.

And this too. Nothing here says he is coming. This page does not know that and nobody does, and any article that promised it would be lying to you.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.Isaiah 40:31

Read who is waited on. Not a son. The Lord. The waiting in that verse has a different object entirely from the one in your garage, and it is the one that supplies the strength for the other. You are being renewed by waiting on Him rather than depleted by waiting on anybody else, and those are two separate accounts. Isaiah 40:31 puts the renewing in God rather than in an outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it in a man in a cold garage in February.

The breakthrough

Your son was never the enemy. He said a vague thing in a vague way six years ago, the way people do, and he has almost certainly forgotten saying it, and none of that is a betrayal.

What visits you twice a year in the winter is not conviction. It is the ordinary embarrassment of having hoped where nobody could see, and it has no standing.

> Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. > Philippians 1:6

He performs it. Not you, and not by means of a bench, and not on a timetable you can read. You are inside a work somebody else is completing, and the gloves were never the mechanism. Philippians 1:6 puts the performing in His hands rather than in your keeping, and the Holy Spirit is the one at work in a thirty-something man who has not been in that garage since before the gloves were bought.

Nothing here tells you to mention them, and nothing here tells you to put them away. Both of those are entirely yours. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the winter feeling answered, and the bench left exactly as it is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no six years can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my boy is His and always was.

  1. Second pair of gloves, you are not foolishness and God never called you that. Romans 5:5 says hope does not make a person ashamed, and that is exactly the feeling that turns up in this garage in February. In the name of Jesus I am leaving you under the light.
  2. Embarrassment that comes twice a year in the winter, you have no authority on this bench. The Holy Spirit is at work in my son today, and Philippians 1:6 says the One who began the work is the One who performs it. I am his father today, and I am keeping and not pressing.
  3. Lord, You have been in this garage for six years and You know exactly what those are for. I thank You, because Your word says You do not forget the work or the love, and You have never once asked me to explain a bench. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and the place stays set, and the waiting is not wasted on me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
