The Table SetJohn 14:2

The Room I Have Not Changed

This message is for the woman who has kept a room ready for a daughter for four years, who has been told twice this year to turn it into an office, and who cannot work out whether keeping it is faith or a refusal to accept something

It is at the end of the hall and the door is usually shut, which is the only concession she has made in four years.

Everything is where it was. Not preserved, exactly. She goes in and opens the window in summer and vacuums it and puts fresh sheets on twice a year and takes them off again. It smells of nothing much. It is a perfectly ordinary room with somebody's things in it.

Twice this year somebody has said the same thing. Her sister in March, and then a friend in July, both of them kindly and both of them clearly having thought about it beforehand.

You could make it an office.

She said something both times about not needing an office, which is true, and both of them left it there, which she is grateful for.

But it has been working on her since July, and the shape of it is this: she cannot tell whether keeping that room is faith or whether it is a refusal to accept something that everybody else has already accepted.

And here is what she has never said to anybody: she does not want an office and she does not want to be a woman who has kept a shrine, and she does not know which of those two she is.

Name what the room actually is

Let me describe it before anybody gets to categorize it, because both categories being offered to you are wrong.

You have kept a room ready. Not preserved. Ready. There is a difference and you have been living inside it without knowing there was a word for it: a preserved room is a room where nothing is allowed to change, and a ready room is a room somebody could walk into and sleep in tonight.

Fresh sheets twice a year is not a shrine. A shrine does not get its windows opened in summer.

And nobody knows. That is the other half of it. Your daughter has not been told the room is there. It has never appeared in a message, never come up on a phone call, never been used to make anybody feel anything.

You have kept a place ready without one ounce of it reaching the person it is for, and four years of that is hospitality rather than refusal. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which covers fresh sheets nobody has slept in, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to name it rather than to hand you a decision.

And Jesus said something about a prepared room that people usually read only at funerals.

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.John 14:2

I go to prepare a place. That is a room being got ready for somebody who is not in it yet, by somebody who is not anxious about the interval.

He did it Himself. It is one of the last things He told them He was doing. Whatever preparing a room for an absent person is, it is not a thing He would have called a refusal.

Ready and preserved are two different rooms

Here is the test, and you can run it yourself in about ten seconds.

If your daughter walked in tonight, would that room be right for the woman she is now, or would it be right for the girl she was four years ago?

If the answer is the second one, that is worth knowing, and it is fixable and it is not a scandal. If it is the first, then what you have is a spare room in good order and two people have misread it.

You are able to tell which one it is, and Scripture never once asks anybody to guess about their own house. Psalm 139:23 hands the searching of a heart to God rather than to a sister in March, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that examining kindly and to a conclusion.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Keeping a room ready is never the same as owing somebody access, and nothing here asks anybody to hold a door open into harm. If there is a reason your daughter is not coming back to that house, then the room can be an office tomorrow and nothing is lost. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, always.

And this too, plainly. Nothing on this page says she is coming. Nobody knows that and any article that promised it would be lying to a woman who has changed those sheets eight times.

The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait.Lamentations 3:25

Quietly wait. That is what has been happening at the end of that hall for four years, and the psalm calls it good rather than calling it stuck. You are doing something Scripture describes as good, and it does so without asking how long it has been. Lamentations 3:25 attaches the goodness to the waiting rather than to the outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the quietness that keeps it from turning into something else.

The breakthrough

Your sister and your friend were never the enemy. They love you and they have watched four years and they cannot see inside the house the way you can, and an office is a sensible suggestion from where they are standing.

What is costing you is not the room. It is the two categories you have been handed, which are faith or denial, and neither of them fits, and you have been trying to force yourself into one of them since July.

> Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. > Hebrews 11:1

The evidence of things not seen. That is a room with fresh sheets and nobody in it, described by Scripture as substance rather than as a symptom. You are holding the substance of something rather than the refusal of something, and the written word gives that its own name. Hebrews 11:1 puts faith exactly where proof is absent, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman recognize her own hallway in a definition.

Nothing here tells you to keep the room and nothing here tells you to change it. Both of those are entirely yours and always were. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a decision: two wrong categories dropped, and a name for what is actually at the end of the hall.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own house was given to you, and no sensible suggestion can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my daughter is His and always was.

  1. Room at the end of the hall, you are not a refusal and God never read you as one. John 14:2 has Christ preparing a place for people who were not in it yet, and He was not anxious about the interval. In the name of Jesus I am leaving you ready.
  2. Two categories I have been handed since July, you have no authority in this house. The Holy Spirit is the one who searches a heart, and Hebrews 11:1 calls what I am holding substance rather than denial. I am here as myself today, and I am neither of the things I was offered.
  3. Lord, You have been at the end of this hall for four years and You know what the sheets are for. I thank You, because Your word says it is good to hope and quietly wait and You never once asked how long it had been. Whatever You do with her is Yours, and the room stays ready, and the waiting is not wasted on me.
