He can tell you what he said in a hospital corridor in the spring of six years ago, in order, including the two sentences he wishes he had left out.
He can tell you what he wrote in an email in the November after that. He can tell you the exact tone of the thing he said at a family lunch about the house, and he can give you three different readings of that tone, one generous, one neutral, and one that keeps him awake.
His father has not spoken to him since. Not coldly, exactly. Just absolutely.
And what he has done with six years is investigate. He has gone over everything he can remember, and he has done it fairly, which is the strangest part. He has not let himself off and he has not been unduly hard on himself either. He has been a careful and scrupulous examiner, and he has been examining one suspect, who is himself, for six years.
He knows why he does it too. If there is a mistake, then there is a cause, and a cause can be understood, and a thing you understand is easier to carry than a thing that simply is.
And here is what he has never said to a single living soul: he is not sure he wants to find it. He is only sure that he cannot stop looking, and that the looking has become the shape of his whole inner life.
An investigation with no jurisdiction
Let me describe what you have actually built before anything is taken down, because it deserves to be looked at squarely.
You have run a fair, thorough, six year inquiry. You have not blamed your father, which most people in your position do within the first year. You have not exonerated yourself, which is the other easy route. You have held both possibilities open and gone through the record again and again.
The trouble is not the rigor. The trouble is jurisdiction. A court with no defendant present, no witness available, and no possibility of a verdict being served is not a court. It is a room where a man sits alone with a notebook.
You are somebody who has been honest with himself for six years, and that honesty is rarer than you think. That is not a kind opinion somebody is offering. Psalm 51:6 says God desires truth in the inward parts, which is exactly what you have been attempting, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to close something rather than to reopen it.
And the psalmist, who was also interested in his own faults, does something with them that you have not done.
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.Psalm 139:23
He hands the search over. He does not conduct it himself. He asks God to do the examining, which means he is not the investigator in that verse, he is the one being examined, and there is an enormous difference between those two positions.
One of them ends. The other one does not.
Being at fault and being the cause are two different things
There may well be a mistake in those six years. Most people who are estranged from somebody did something, and the two sentences in the corridor may genuinely have been a poor choice.
But a mistake is not the same as a cause. Your father's six years of silence is a decision made repeatedly by an adult with his own history, his own fear, and his own reasons, most of which predate that corridor by decades.
You are responsible for what you said and you were never responsible for what he decided, and no amount of searching will make the second one yours. Scripture puts it plainly in Ezekiel 18:20, where each account stays with the person whose name is on it, and the Holy Spirit is at work in your father today without one further finding from your inquiry.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed at anybody, and nothing here tells you to write to your father or to apologize again. This category does not advise contact. And if there is a reason the distance has been a protection for you, then it has been a protection and this page will not call it a failure. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, always.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18
Contrite, not conclusive. You are already in the category the verse promises rescue to, and the entrance requirement was a broken heart rather than a completed investigation. Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness in God rather than in your reaching a finding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the drawing near while a man sits under a lamp with a notebook.
Your father was never the enemy, and neither is the memory of that corridor. Two sentences said in a hospital in the spring, by a frightened man about his own father, are not the hinge of a decade.
What is costing you is not the fault. It is the search, and the fact that the search cannot conclude, and that you have been living inside a proceeding with no possible end.
> Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? > Romans 8:33
Two questions, both of them rhetorical, both of them designed to empty a courtroom. You are standing in a court where the prosecution has been asked to identify itself and cannot, and the only remaining occupant of that room has been you. Romans 8:33 puts the justifying in God's hands rather than in the outcome of an inquiry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns the lamp off over a notebook.
Nothing here tells you to write to him. Nothing here suggests that finding the mistake would bring him back, because nobody knows that and it would be cruel to imply it. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than an explanation: the right to close the file, and to hand the searching to somebody qualified to do it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no six year silence can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my father is His and always was.
- Investigation I have been running into myself, you are closed and God is the one closing you. Psalm 139:23 hands the searching to Him and asks Him to do the trying, and a man who conducts his own inquiry never gets to the end of it. In the name of Jesus I am shutting the file.
- Belief that finding the mistake would bring him back, you have no authority in this room tonight. The Holy Spirit is at work in my father today, and Ezekiel 18:20 leaves every account with the person whose name is on it. I am his son tonight, and I am not the cause of his six years.
- Lord, You were in that corridor in the spring and You heard both of the sentences I wish I had not said. I thank You, because Your word says You are near to the broken hearted and the requirement was never a finding. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
