The yard at the recycling center is loud on a Saturday morning. Glass going into the glass skip sounds like weather. There is a line of cars down the ramp with their engines running, a man in a high visibility coat waving people into bays, and the smell of warm dust and old paper over everything.
A woman lifts a box out of the back of a borrowed van. It is the last one. She has been counting them for weeks the way you count stairs in the dark. Five months ago her mother's house had a chair in every room and a life in every drawer, and she has emptied it by herself. She sorted the kitchen by herself. She took the curtains down by herself, standing on a dining chair with her shoes off. She found the birth certificates in a biscuit tin and sat on the hall floor with them for an hour, by herself. She sent her brother eleven messages. She left a key with the neighbor in case he wanted the clock. He never came, and he never answered.
So she carries the last box across the yard, and she puts it in the skip, and then she is standing in the middle of a busy place with nothing in her hands at all, and she does not know what to do with them.
That is the part nobody warns you about. Not the work. The moment the work runs out. There has been a next thing every day for so long that the next thing was holding you up, and now there is no next thing, and your hands hang there like they have been left out of something. And the sentence you have been outrunning since about the second month walks straight up to you in a yard full of noise: I have done everything I know how to do, and they are never going to come.
I am not going to argue with that sentence. I am going to come and stand next to it.
The gate is a real place
Land is cut into lengths by walls and fences and gates, and every one of those lines means something. A ditch runs down through a field and stops at a gate. You can clear your own length of it. You can clear it in the rain until the water runs sweet through the pipe again, and then you come to the gate, and the ground on the other side belongs to somebody else. It is not tiredness that stops you there. It is a boundary. Someone drew it, it is real, and honoring it is not the same thing as walking away.
Moses stood in front of a whole nation on the last day of his life, with people asking him what was coming for their children, and he drew that line out loud.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.Deuteronomy 29:29
Hear what that hands you, because it hands you two things and only one of them is a job. The revealed things belong to you. The hidden things belong to Him, and they always did, and He has never once asked you to break His gate open and go and work His side of the field. You are standing tonight on the finished half of your own life. I am not offering that as encouragement I made up: it is written, and it is His Spirit who makes an old line like that land on a person in a yard full of glass.
There is a question underneath the silence, and I want to name it, because it is the one that keeps people awake at four in the morning. It is not where are they. It is: was there a sentence I never found? Some better wording, a different tone, an approach a wiser person would have taken. That question sends a person back through five months of messages looking for the one they should have written instead.
You went looking in the dark for that sentence. It is not there. Not because you looked badly. Because it never existed. There has never been a form of words that reaches into another human being and turns them, and the day there is one, love will have stopped being love and started being machinery. What you did was reach, over and over, in the only language you had. That is not the same as failing.
So let me say the plain thing over you. You are not the reason they are not here. The word of God puts the hidden things on His side of the boundary, and a heart that will not turn is one of the hidden things, and His Spirit is the only one who has ever moved a heart in the history of the world. You were never given a lever. You were given a length of ditch, and you cleared it to the gate.
Now, what do you do with a mouth and a boundary and a God who is awake?
You speak. That is the whole shape of it, and Jesus set the measure of what it takes so low that the people listening argued with Him about it. He did not tell them to come back with more. He told them that what heaven waits for is not a greater quantity of anything at all; it is a mouth turned toward the mountain and actually speaking to it (Matthew 17:20). Not thinking it. Not hoping it in the car. Saying it, out loud, where your own ears can hear you.
And that mouth is yours by right, not by achievement. You have standing to speak, not because you held this family together for five months on your own, but because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and what He finished is the only ground any of us ever speak from. Scripture calls people like you an ambassador, and an ambassador never invents the message; he carries what the King already said. His Spirit is the one who makes a carried word live in an actual room.
I will not tell you what God is going to do about your brother, your sister, your father, whoever the empty chair belongs to. Nobody was ever authorized to tell you that, and a promise nobody was authorized to make is worth exactly nothing on the night you need it. What I can tell you is this: He is awake on His side of the gate, and He is not waiting for you to word it better.
And here is what is settled while you read. You are free tonight whether they come or not, and that freedom is not a mood you have to manufacture on a hard morning. It is written into what Christ finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it off the page and into your chest, which is why it can arrive on a day when nothing about your family has changed at all.
So put it down. Not the love. The love stays; it was never the problem, and you are not being asked to feel less. Put down the load. You have been carrying the whole weight of two people's part in this, and only one of those parts was ever handed to you. The word of God has already assigned which one, and His Spirit is here in this room to make the handing over a real thing that happens, and not just a nice thought you had once on a Saturday.
And if what you are carrying tonight is heavier than an empty pair of hands, do not carry it alone in a room. Tell one safe person today, or call a crisis line where you live and let a human being sit with you in it. That is not a detour from any of this. It is the same care, wearing shoes.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, and say them out loud, because the authority in them is not your effort talking. You are in Christ, and what He finished belongs to you before you open your mouth. Whether that door ever opens again is His to decide, and however He answers it, the part He handed you is already done.
- Last box, you were where my part ended, and you are not where my love ended. The revealed things belong to me and I did every one of them, all the way to the gate, and the hidden things belong to God. I stop at the boundary He drew and I stop there clean, in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict that I did not try hard enough, you have no standing here and I am not signing you. The word of God put the hidden things on His side and never once put a lever in my hands, so the silence past that gate is not a report card on me. Get off my hands and get out of my mornings.
- Lord Jesus, You are holding him where I have never been able to reach, and Your Spirit is nearer to him tonight than any letter of mine ever got. What was never mine I am handing back to You, and I am not picking it up again on the way out of this room. My hands are down and they are open.
