She kept a note on her phone with the dates on it, which she has never admitted to anybody.
Ten years. Every christening, every birthday with a number on the end of it, two graduations, her mother's seventieth, three Christmases at her own house, one funeral where she rang rather than wrote because it seemed wrong to send a card.
Not one yes. Two maybes, years apart, both of which turned into nothing. Mostly no reply at all, which after a while stops being a wound and becomes a fact about the weather.
This year there is a party for her father, and she made the list on a Sunday afternoon, and when she got to that name she stopped, and then she went on to the next one.
She has been examining herself ever since. Not gently, either. She keeps checking the temperature of her own heart the way you would check a pan. Is that peace or is that hardness. Did I stop because I was released or did I stop because something in me finally closed.
And here is what she has never said to a single soul in that family: she is more frightened of having become a hard woman than she ever was of being turned down.
Look at what ten years of that cost
Let me put those years down properly before an ounce comes off them, because you have never let yourself count them as anything except normal.
Every one of those invitations cost you something. Not much on its own. The writing, the wondering, the small braced feeling on the day, the moment at every single event where you noticed that the person had not come. Multiply that by ten years and about twenty-five occasions and it is a real sum.
And you kept doing it without escalating, without a lecture, without a single guilt-shaped sentence attached. That is not somebody trying to win. That is somebody keeping a door open at their own expense.
You are somebody who paid a small price twenty-five times over and never once sent the bill, and heaven has that written down properly. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, which covers a list on a phone that nobody else knows exists, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift something rather than to reopen it.
And the psalm gives a picture of a settled heart that is not a hard one, and the difference is the whole subject.
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.Psalm 131:2
A weaned child is still in its mother's arms. That is the picture. It has not been put down and it has not gone cold, it has simply stopped needing the one thing it used to cry for, and it can now be held for its own sake.
That is not hardness. Scripture presents it as the highest state of rest in the whole psalm.
Stopping and hardening are not the same thing
A hard heart does not check itself. That is the actual test, and it is worth saying plainly: the woman on the Sunday afternoon who stopped at a name and has been examining herself ever since is not the woman she is afraid she has become.
Hardness does not audit. Hardness is comfortable. What you have is a tender heart that has run out of a particular kind of energy, and those two things look similar only from the inside.
You are still soft, and the fear itself is the evidence. Scripture puts it plainly in Ezekiel 36:26, where God is the one who gives a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that work rather than leaving it to your own inspection.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed at anybody, and nothing here tells you to add the name back to the list. This category does not advise contact. And if there is a reason the distance has been a protection for you, then it has been a protection and this page will not call it a coldness. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, always.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom.Isaiah 40:11
Carried, gathered, held close. You are being carried rather than assessed, and the carrying does not pause while a woman works out whether she is a good person. Isaiah 40:11 puts the gathering in the Shepherd's arm rather than in your own steadiness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that felt on a Sunday afternoon over a half written list.
Your cousin was never the enemy. Somewhere in her there is a reason for ten years of silence that has probably very little to do with you, and you are not in a position to see it and never have been.
What is costing you is not the empty chair at twenty-five events. It is the inspection. It is that you have made yourself the suspect and you have been running the interview for weeks.
> Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me. > Psalm 139:23
Read who is doing the searching in that verse. Not the psalmist. He asks God to do it, which is the opposite of what you have been doing, and it is the only version of self-examination that ever produces peace. You are searched by somebody who is not looking for a reason to condemn you, and the verdict was never yours to reach on your own. Psalm 139:23 hands the examining to God rather than keeping it in your hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who conducts it kindly.
Nothing here tells you to add the name back. Nothing here says a different invitation would have worked, because that is not true and it would be cruel to suggest it. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reconciliation: the right to know that ten years were complete, and to stop interviewing yourself about the eleventh.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own heart was given to you, and no unanswered invitation can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with her is His and always was.
- Charge that my heart has gone hard, you are false and God never brought you. Psalm 131:2 shows a weaned child still in the arms, quiet rather than cold, and that is a picture of rest and not of a closed heart. In the name of Jesus I am throwing you out.
- Fear of the woman I might have become, you have no authority over this Sunday. The Holy Spirit is at work in my cousin today, and Ezekiel 36:26 says God is the one who gives a heart of flesh and He has not taken it back. I am here as myself today, and I am under no inspection.
- Lord, You saw every one of those twenty-five invitations go out and You saw me stop at her name on the list. I thank You, because Your word says my wanderings are numbered and You have never once billed me for a single one. Whatever You do with her is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.
