Twenty-Two Years of the Same Name

This message is for the man who has prayed for his estranged brother every single day for twenty-two years and has begun to feel that he is being graded on the outcome, and that somewhere in the praying it turned into a performance he is failing

He says the name at the end. That is how it has always gone. Everything else first, and then the name, and then he gets up.

Twenty-two years. He was thirty-one when it started and he is fifty-three now, and he has said his brother's name to God on something like eight thousand mornings.

For the first few years it was a plea and it had heat in it. For a long stretch in the middle it was a habit and he was fine with that, because habits carry you when heat does not. And in the last two or three years something has changed that he cannot get comfortable with.

It has started to feel like a test he is being marked on.

He notices himself listening to how he says it. He notices himself wondering whether he means it enough this morning, whether the fact that nothing has changed in twenty-two years is information about the praying, whether a man who really believed would have prayed differently.

Last Tuesday he got to the name and could not say it, and he sat there for a while and then said amen and got up, and that has been sitting on him ever since.

And here is what he has never said to a single person: he does not know whether he is praying for his brother any more, or whether he is sitting an examination every morning and failing it.

What twenty-two years of that actually is

Let me describe it accurately before anything comes off it, because nobody has ever described it back to you.

Eight thousand mornings. No audience. No result to point at. No encouragement from anybody, because you have never told anybody you do it. That is not a man performing. A performance requires somebody watching, and there has never been anybody in that kitchen at that hour.

That is faithfulness in the most unglamorous form it comes in.

You are somebody who has kept a hidden appointment for twenty-two years, and heaven has that recorded exactly as it happened. Nobody is being kind to you here. Matthew 6:6 has Jesus describing prayer in a shut room and a Father who sees in secret, which is the exact architecture of your kitchen at six in the morning, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift something rather than to grade it.

And Paul, writing to people who did not know how to pray about a thing, describes what is actually happening in a room like yours.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26

Read who is doing the work. Not the person praying. The Spirit, making intercession, in groanings that have no words in them at all, precisely because the person praying does not know how to do it properly.

That verse was written for a Tuesday when a man gets to the name and cannot say it.

Praying and producing are two different things

Prayer is a conversation with somebody who loves you. Producing is delivering an outcome, and it comes with a grade.

Somewhere in twenty-two years those two got welded together, and now every morning carries a performance review attached, and no wonder you could not get the word out on Tuesday.

You are not being marked, and you never were, and there is no scoreboard in that kitchen. Scripture puts it plainly in Romans 8:1, where there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is at work in your brother's life today with no reference at all to how well you said his name this morning.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Being released is never the same as being pushed at anybody, and nothing here tells you to write to your brother or to pray harder. This category does not advise contact and it will not hand you a new discipline. And if there is a reason contact would not be safe, then the distance is a protection and this page treats it as one. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, every single time.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.Nahum 1:7

He knows them. Not He assesses them. You are known by Him rather than examined by Him, and the knowing did not begin on a morning when you got the words out well. Nahum 1:7 puts the stronghold in God rather than in your consistency, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to sit in a kitchen without a red pen in the room.

The breakthrough

The praying was never the enemy. Eight thousand mornings of saying a brother's name to God is one of the more beautiful things a person can do with a life, and none of it has been wasted.

What is costing you is not the discipline. It is that you have been reading the unchanged situation as a result you produced, and every unanswered year as a mark against your name.

> Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. > 1 Peter 5:7

He cares. That is the reason given, and it is the reason that closes the examination room. You are cast on somebody who cares rather than somebody who is marking, and the caring is His and does not depend on your delivery. 1 Peter 5:7 puts the transfer of the whole weight in His hands rather than in your fervency, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was already interceding on Tuesday when the word would not come.

Nothing here tells you to stop praying and nothing here tells you to pray better. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than an answer: the right to know that your part is not the outcome, and to sit in that kitchen tomorrow with nothing at stake.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no unanswered year can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my brother is His and always was.

  1. Exam I have been sitting every morning, you are not prayer and God never set you. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit intercedes with groanings that have no words in them at all, and that verse was written for a man who cannot get a name out. In the name of Jesus I am putting the paper down.
  2. Suspicion that twenty-two years of nothing is a report on my faith, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is at work in my brother today, and 1 Corinthians 3:7 says God gives the increase and never once said the waterer does. I am his brother today, and I am not on trial.
  3. Lord, You have been in this kitchen for eight thousand mornings and You were here on Tuesday when I could not say it. I thank You, because Your word says You care and that is the reason given for casting the whole thing on You. Whatever You do with him is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
