How Many Times Is Enough

This message is for the woman who apologized fully to her sister twice, six years apart, with nothing held back either time, and who has been told that it was not enough, and who has begun to try to work out what number would be

The first time was at the kitchen table in the year their mother died. The second time was six years later, on the phone, and she had written it down first so she would not lose her nerve.

Both times she said all of it. Not the version that keeps a little back for dignity. All of it. What she did, what it must have felt like from the other side, what she had not understood at the time and did understand now. No explanations. No but you have to see it from where I was standing.

Her sister said, the first time, that she would think about it. And the second time she said, quite quietly, that it was easy to say sorry.

That was four years ago and there has been Christmas cards since and nothing else.

And here is the thing that has started happening in her head, and she has never said it to anybody: she has begun trying to work out the number. Would three have done it. Would a letter have been better than a phone call. If she went again, in person, next spring, would that be the one.

She is sixty-one years old and she is doing arithmetic on an apology.

There is no number and there never was

Let me say the plain thing first, because it is the thing that will actually take weight off, and nobody has said it to you.

There is no count. Not four, not seven, not seventy times seven, not in person next spring. An apology is not a payment and repentance is not a currency, and if there were a number then somebody would be able to tell you what it is, and nobody can, because it does not exist.

What you did twice was complete both times. Complete does not mean accepted. Those are two different words and the distance between them is exactly where you have been living for four years.

You are somebody who did the whole thing properly, twice, and neither time was a rehearsal. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Psalm 51:17 says the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit and a contrite heart, and that He will not despise it, which is a statement about what He receives rather than about what a sister receives, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift something rather than to send you back for another attempt.

And the psalmist writes down exactly what happened when he said it, once.

I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.Psalm 32:5

Read the order in it. He said he would confess. And the forgiveness lands in the same sentence, before the confession is even described as finished. There is no waiting period in that verse and there is no second attempt.

Being forgiven and being received are two different things

You have been forgiven. That happened at the kitchen table in the year your mother died, and it happened by God, and it did not require your sister's signature.

Being received back by her is a separate matter entirely, and it is not in your hands, and it never was. You have been treating one as evidence about the other, and they are not connected in the way the pain of it makes them feel connected.

You are already clean, and the cleanness is not held up pending anybody's decision about you. Scripture puts it plainly in 1 John 1:9, where confession meets a God who is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse, and the Holy Spirit is at work in your sister's life today without one more word from you being required.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly. Being released is never the same as being pushed at somebody, and nothing on this page asks you to try again, write, or plan a spring visit. This category never advises contact. And if there is a reason contact would not be safe, then the distance is a protection rather than a failure. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before reconciliation, always.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:12

That is a measurement with no end on it, chosen on purpose because north and south have poles and east and west do not. You are standing at an immeasurable distance from the thing you keep going back for, and the distance was set by Him rather than earned by you. Psalm 103:12 puts the removing in God's hands rather than in a sister's, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman feel a distance she has been told to keep closing.

The breakthrough

Your sister was never the enemy. She said something quiet on a phone four years ago out of a grief you cannot see the whole of, and people say things in that state that they are not able to revisit later.

What is costing you is not her sentence. It is the arithmetic. It is that you have accepted the idea that there is a right number and that you simply have not reached it yet, and that idea has had you doing sums at sixty-one.

> Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. > Isaiah 1:18

Notice who is doing the whitening in that verse, and notice that no quantity is mentioned anywhere in it. You are as white as snow already by His doing, and no number was ever attached to it. Isaiah 1:18 puts the whole transaction in God's hands rather than in a tally, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and lays it over a woman who has been counting.

Nothing here tells you to go a third time. Nothing here says a letter would have been better, because that is not true and saying it would be cruel. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a reconciliation: the right to know that your part was finished the first time and finished again the second, and to put the arithmetic down.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are sitting. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own part was given to you, and no sister can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a woman's faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with my sister is His and always was.

  1. Count I have been trying to reach, you do not exist and God never set you. Psalm 32:5 has forgiveness landing in the same breath as the confession, with no waiting period and no second attempt written anywhere in it. In the name of Jesus I am putting the arithmetic down.
  2. Whisper that a better apology would have done it, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is at work in my sister today, and Psalm 103:12 measures the distance east to west, which is a distance with no end on it. I am here as myself today, and I owe nothing further to anybody.
  3. Lord, You were at that table the year we buried her and You were on the phone six years later. I thank You, because Your word says a broken spirit is a sacrifice You will not despise, and You received both of mine. Whatever You do with her is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
