Peace Worth MakingEzekiel 13:10

The Room That Stopped Arguing

This message is for the husband who worked out that his house has not had a raised voice in four years and has not had a real conversation in about the same time, and who has been calling the whole arrangement a good marriage

He noticed it in the truck, of all places, waiting for a light to change on a Tuesday.

Four years. Four years since anybody in his house raised their voice. He turned that over for a block and a half and felt fairly good about it, because that is what he has told people. We do not fight. We have never been shouters. It has been peaceful in our place for years now.

Then the light changed, and a second sentence arrived behind the first one and would not get out of the road. Four years since anybody raised a voice, and about four years since anybody said anything either.

He tried to remember the last real conversation. Not the logistics, not the calendar, not who is picking up who. The other kind. He got as far as the spring the furnace went out and could not get any closer than that.

At home there is a chair he sits in and a chair she sits in and a television between them that is on more than it used to be. Nobody is angry. Everybody is polite. The house runs like a machine somebody oiled and then walked away from.

And here is the thing he did not say to anyone that week: it is very calm in there, and he has started to wonder what the calm is made of.

Calm is not the same as sound

Let me say the true thing about those four years before one ounce of weight comes off them, because you have not heard it said and it needs saying.

Those years were not laziness. Somebody in that house made a decision, probably years before the four, that the cost of a raised voice was higher than the cost of not saying it. That decision has kept a family in one piece. It has kept kids from hearing what you heard growing up. It was not cowardice and it was not indifference, and God has never once filed it under either.

You are a man who chose quiet on purpose to protect people you love, and heaven has that on record correctly. That is not a kind opinion somebody is offering you. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far away, which includes the calculation you made in a hallway a long time ago, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it up now to lift it rather than to charge you with it.

But there is a second thing, and Ezekiel says it in a sentence that has no padding in it at all.

Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered morter.Ezekiel 13:10

One crew builds the wall. Another crew comes along and paints it. The paint is the problem, because paint is what makes a wall that will not hold look exactly like a wall that will. Ezekiel is not angry at the people living behind it. He is talking to the ones who painted and called the job finished.

The blessing is on the maker, not the manager

Keeping the peace costs the household nothing and costs the keeper everything. That is the whole test and it works every time you run it.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Look at who the blessing is aimed at. Not at the calm ones. Not at the ones who never made anybody uncomfortable. The makers. And the thing handed to them is a family name rather than a medal, which means the standing you have been quietly trying to earn by never starting anything is already yours by another route entirely.

You have that name on you this morning, and it did not arrive on the back of four silent years or get withdrawn by a hard conversation. Matthew 5:9 hands it out as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it inside you, which is why it holds steady in a room where nothing is being said.

A keeper paints the wall. A maker knocks on it and listens to what it sounds like.

Where your part ends

This has to be plain rather than assumed. Making peace has never meant handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is in that house is not a careful marriage but a dangerous one, nothing written here is asking you to stay put and be brave about it. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and understand that being safe is not a failure of peace. No verse on this page is available to hold anybody anywhere.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.Hebrews 12:14

Follow it. Pursue it. Hebrews puts a verb of motion on it, which is the opposite of standing very still and hoping. You are free to move toward something true, and you were never required to keep a room frozen in order to keep it loved. Hebrews 12:14 makes peace a thing you go after rather than a thing you preserve, and the Holy Spirit has been moving in that house for four years without asking your permission first.

The breakthrough

The argument was never the enemy. The argument is a house saying out loud what it has been thinking, and for four years the volume in your place has been turned down to nothing by somebody who was trying to protect everybody in it.

You have a voice. It was given to you for more than keeping a room level. James puts the order of true wisdom in a single sentence, and the order in it is not accidental.

> But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated. > James 3:17

Pure comes first and peaceable comes second, and they are not rivals. You have that whole order inside you already, and honesty stopped being the enemy of gentleness in your kitchen the day Christ took up residence in you. James 3:17 puts it in that sequence deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one supplying the wisdom rather than leaving you to invent it between the truck and the driveway.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs your wife to respond, your kids to notice, or the television to go off. What is being handed back is smaller and heavier than a resolution: the right to know what those four years actually were, and to stop giving them a name they did not earn.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing right where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true in your own home was given to you, and it is not that house's to hand over or take back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little they were holding. He set it there because a mountain never moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened their mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that house is His and always was.

  1. Careful quiet in this kitchen, you are not peace and God never signed you off as peace. Ezekiel 13:10 refuses to call a painted wall a sound one, and this family is loved far too much to live behind filler. In the name of Jesus I am putting the brush down.
  2. Fear that the first true sentence will break everything, you have no authority in this room. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers rather than on the men who kept the volume down. I am here as myself tonight, and I am not managing one person in this house.
  3. Lord, You have been in this front room through every one of the four years and every one of the years before them. I thank You, because Your word never once mistook my quiet for peace and You never held it against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and the chair I sit in is mine, and I am turning it to face the room.
