Peace Worth MakingJames 3:18

The Name They Gave Her

This message is for the woman everybody in her family and her friendship group calls the calm one, who has begun to dread her own phone because a compliment turned into an assignment somewhere along the way

Her phone lit up at ten past eleven on a Thursday and she felt her stomach go before she read the name on the screen.

That is new. Or rather, it is not new, but noticing it is. For about fifteen years now she has been the one people call. Her sister calls her when their mother has said the thing again. Two friends from the old small group call her in rotation, though they have no idea they are in a rotation. Her cousin called her from a parking lot in March and talked for fifty-one minutes and did not ask her a single question.

They all say the same thing about her, in the same warm voice, and they have been saying it since she was about nineteen. You are so calm. You are the calm one. Whatever is going on, you never lose it.

She has always taken that as a compliment, because it was offered as one. But at ten past eleven on a Thursday her stomach went before she read the screen, and a compliment does not do that to a person.

And here is the sentence she has never said to any of the people who love her: somewhere between nineteen and now, being calm stopped being a description of her and turned into the thing she is for.

A name can quietly become a post

Let me say the true thing about those fifteen years before an ounce of weight comes off you, because I doubt one of the people who calls you has ever said it.

You did not become the steady one by accident, and you did not become it out of pride. Somewhere back there you were in a room that needed somebody not to come apart, and you found out you could be that person, and you were good at it, and being good at it is precisely how it stopped being a gift you offered and became a post you hold.

You are the reason several people you love have got through some very bad months, and you were never once performing. Do not read that as flattery. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love you have showed toward His name in ministering to the saints, which means the fifty-one minutes in that parking lot were seen and kept, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift it rather than to bill you.

But there is a second thing, and James puts it in one line with the accounting right in it.

And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.James 3:18

Read where the peace sits in that sentence. It is not the crop. It is the field. Peace is the ground the maker sows into, which means a peacemaker is somebody who plants, not somebody who absorbs. Absorbing produces nothing. It only stores.

The blessing is on the maker

Keeping the peace costs the people calling you nothing at all and costs the one who answers everything. That is the test, and it comes out the same every single time.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Look at who the blessing is aimed at. Not the unshakable ones. Not the ones who never made anybody uncomfortable. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name and not a reputation, which means the standing you have been earning one phone call at a time was already given to you by a road you never had to walk.

You have that name on you this morning, and it was not awarded for fifteen years of steadiness and it does not get revoked by one unanswered call. Matthew 5:9 hands it out as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it inside you, which is why it holds even on a Thursday when your stomach drops.

A keeper is called the calm one. A maker is called a child of God, and only one of those two names was issued by somebody who knows the whole of you.

Where your part ends

This needs saying plainly rather than gently. Making peace is not the same as handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is in your family is not demanding but dangerous, nothing here asks you to keep answering and be gracious about it. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace. There is not one verse on this page that can be used to keep anybody in reach of harm.

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.Proverbs 22:3

Scripture has a whole category for stepping out of the way of something, and it does not file it under cowardice. It files it under prudence. You are allowed to be out of range, and you were never issued a duty to be reachable at all hours by everybody who loves you. Proverbs 22:3 puts that in the written word rather than leaving it to your conscience to invent, and the Holy Spirit has been at work in every one of those people without needing your phone to be on.

The breakthrough

The phone call was never the enemy. A person calling you is a person telling the truth about how bad it has got, and that is a good thing in a world where most people say they are fine.

What has gone wrong is not the calls. It is that you have been given a name by people who only ever saw you steady, and you have been living inside it.

> But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. > Ephesians 4:15

Truth and love in the same clause, growing in the same direction, both of them heading somewhere. You have both of those in you already, and honesty stopped being the enemy of kindness the day Christ became the head of you. Ephesians 4:15 puts them in one breath rather than making you choose, and the Holy Spirit is the one growing it in you rather than leaving you to hold two opposites apart with your bare hands.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs your sister to notice, your cousin to ask a question, or any of the people in that rotation to change one thing. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know which name you have actually been living under, and to stop answering to the wrong one in your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no group of people gets to issue it or withdraw it. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little they had. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with every one of those people is His and always was.

  1. The calm one, you are a job title and God never made you my name. James 3:18 says peace is the field a maker sows into, and I am done being the place other people store what they cannot carry. In the name of Jesus I am putting this title down.
  2. Dread of the screen lighting up, you have no authority over my morning. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the women who simply never came apart. I am here as myself today, and I am not managing one person on that list.
  3. Lord, You have been in every one of those calls, and You never once mistook my steadiness for peace. I thank You, because Your word says You have not forgotten a single hour of it and You have not held one of them against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and the name on me is Yours too, and I am answering to that one.
