Peace Worth MakingRomans 14:19

Useful Is Not the Same as Blessed

This message is for the woman whose church and family have called her a peacemaker since she was nineteen, who has just worked out that the word arrives most often when somebody needs her to absorb something, and who cannot tell whether it is a blessing or a job description

She noticed it in the church parking lot, of all places, standing between two open car doors on a Tuesday.

A woman she has known for twenty years had just finished telling her about a situation on the hospitality team, and it had gone on a while, and there was a name in it that she was clearly meant to go and speak to. And at the end of it, the woman put a hand on her arm and said, warmly and completely sincerely, you are such a peacemaker.

She drove home and it sat with her all week, and by Friday she could say why. It is not that the word is untrue. It is when it arrives. Nobody has ever said it to her on a good day. It gets said to her in car lots and doorways and text messages, always at the exact moment somebody needs a thing carried, and it always arrives about ten seconds before the thing is handed over.

She has been hearing it since she was nineteen. She has taken it as a compliment for twenty-two years.

And here is the sentence she has not said to a soul: she cannot tell any more whether she is being blessed or being booked.

What that word has been doing

Let me name it plainly before anything comes off you, because that word has been doing a job in your life and nobody has ever said so out loud.

A compliment does not usually arrive attached to a task. When it does, it stops being a description and becomes a lever. That is not necessarily anybody's malice. Most of the people who say it to you love you. But a whole community has learned that if you name a woman a peacemaker in the doorway, she will pick the thing up, and communities learn that the way water learns a channel: without deciding to.

You are not imagining it, and you were never ungrateful for noticing. That is not somebody taking your side. Proverbs 20:5 says counsel in the heart is like deep water and a woman of understanding will draw it out, which is exactly what you have just done to yourself in a parking lot, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought it up rather than letting you go another twenty-two years without seeing it.

And there is a second thing, and Paul puts it in a sentence with two objects in it, not one.

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.Romans 14:19

Peace and building. Both. In the same clause, joined, as though they always travel together. Which means peace, in Paul's hands, is a thing that leaves people stronger than it found them. Absorbing does not build anybody. It only keeps the roof on, and it keeps it on at the cost of the one holding it up.

The blessing is on the maker

Keeping the peace costs the community nothing and costs the keeper everything she has. That is the test, and it always comes out the same way.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Look hard at who the blessing is for. Not the reliable ones. Not the ones who never said no. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name and not a role on a roster, which means the standing you have been earning for twenty-two years in doorways was already given to you by a road you never had to walk.

You have that name on you right now, and it was not conferred by the hospitality team and it cannot be withdrawn by anybody in that parking lot. Matthew 5:9 hands it out as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds whether you go and speak to that person or you do not.

A keeper gets called a peacemaker when something needs absorbing. A maker is called a child of God on an ordinary Tuesday when nobody wants anything.

Where your part ends

This gets said plainly and not implied. Making peace is never the same as handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is being asked of you is not inconvenient but unsafe, nothing here asks you to walk into it graciously. Get yourself safe. Tell one real person who can actually do something. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and there is not a verse on this page that can be used to hold anybody in reach of harm.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.Isaiah 41:10

Read who is doing the holding in that verse. Not you. You are held up by Him rather than by your usefulness, and that grip does not loosen the day you stop carrying things for people. Isaiah 41:10 puts the strengthening in God rather than in your availability, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a promise like that land in a woman who has been the strong one since she was nineteen.

The breakthrough

The word peacemaker was never the enemy. Jesus said it, and He said it as a blessing, and there is nothing wrong with the word. What went wrong is that a beatitude got used as a handle, and you have been picked up by it in doorways for two decades.

You have a voice, and it was not given to you only for saying yes in a parking lot.

> Open rebuke is better than secret love. > Proverbs 27:5

That is a startling verse and it is in the book on purpose. Something said out in the open is worth more than an affection that never risks anything. You have that kind of speech in you already, and openness stopped being the enemy of love the day Christ moved into you. Proverbs 27:5 puts the two on the same side rather than opposite ones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives the wording in the moment rather than leaving you to rehearse it in the car.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs that woman to see it, the team to change, or anybody to stop saying the word to you. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know what has been happening in those doorways, and to stop calling it by the wrong name in your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no congregation and no family can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little they were holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with that church and that family is His and always was.

  1. Job description, you are not a blessing and God never handed you to me as one. Romans 14:19 puts peace and building in the same sentence, and nothing I have absorbed in a doorway has ever built one person. In the name of Jesus I am giving you back.
  2. Fear that I am only wanted for what I carry, you have no authority over me this evening. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the women who never said no. I am here as myself today, and I am not managing one person on that team.
  3. Lord, You have been in every parking lot and every doorway for twenty-two years. I thank You, because Your word says I am kept by grace and not by usefulness, and You have never once loved me for what I could carry. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and this name is Yours to give, and I am taking it from You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
