Peace Worth MakingColossians 3:15

They Check My Face First

This message is for the mother who caught her two children checking her face before either of them asked for anything, and understood in that second that she has become the weather in her own kitchen

It took a quarter of a second and she has not been able to unsee it since.

Her son came into the kitchen with his coat still on and a question already halfway up his throat, and before it got out, he looked at her. Not at her hands, not at the counter. At her face. Then his sister came in behind him and did exactly the same thing, in exactly the same order, and neither of them knew they had done it.

They were checking. Reading. Working out what kind of evening it was going to be before deciding whether to ask about the school trip.

She said something normal and put the kettle on and they went off down the hall, and she stood there holding a cold mug and thinking: I taught them that.

Not on purpose. Nobody sits a child down and teaches them to read a face. They learn it the way you learn any weather, by living in it, and she has been the weather in that kitchen for a long time. She has held that house level through some very bad years and she has been proud of it, and there is a good argument that it saved them.

And here is the sentence she did not say to anybody: everybody in this house calls it peaceful, and she has just found out what it is made of.

Somebody has been holding this level

Let me say the true thing before a single ounce of it comes off you, because I doubt anybody in that house has ever said it out loud and it needs saying.

That kitchen is level because you level it. It runs on a calculation nobody sees: what mood is coming through the door, which subject can be raised tonight, how brightly you have to say hello so that the room reads it correctly. That is a full shift with no title and no cover and no end date, and it has been running for years while everybody else has been having their dinner.

You are the reason those two children have had a stable home, and none of it was pretending. That sentence is not a favor anybody is doing you. Matthew 10:30 says the very hairs of your head are numbered, which means the level was watched and counted rather than assumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift it off you and not to hand you a bill for it.

But there is a second thing, and Paul puts it in one word that most people read straight past.

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.Colossians 3:15

The word Paul reaches for there is the word for an umpire. Let peace be the one who makes the call. Which means peace, in that sentence, is a thing that decides, not a thing that gets arranged. A referee does not keep a match quiet. A referee keeps it true. Nothing in that verse is asking you to be the atmosphere.

The blessing is on the maker

Keeping the peace is free to everybody in the house except the one keeping it. That is the test, and it comes out the same way every time.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Notice who that is aimed at. Not the ones who never made anybody uncomfortable. Not the steady ones. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name rather than a reward, which means the standing you have been trying to earn by keeping the weather fair is a standing already given to you by another road entirely.

You have that name on you tonight, and it was not issued for a run of good evenings and it is not withdrawn by a hard one. Matthew 5:9 gives it as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is exactly why it holds while you are standing at a counter holding a cold mug.

A keeper is the weather. A maker is a person in the room, and a person can be asked a question.

Where your part ends

This has to be said plainly and not implied. Making peace is not the same thing as handing yourself over to be hurt. If what is in that house is not difficult but dangerous, nothing here is asking you to hold it level and be brave. Get yourself safe. Tell one real person who can actually do something. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and there is no verse on this page that can be used to keep anybody where they are being harmed.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1

A refuge is a place you go to, which means going is allowed and it is in the written word. You are already inside something stronger than the room you are standing in, and the door of it was never conditional on you keeping anybody calm. Psalm 46:1 puts refuge in God rather than in a well managed evening, and the Holy Spirit is the very present help in the verse, present tense, in that kitchen, tonight.

The breakthrough

The question was never the enemy. Your son with his coat still on had something ordinary to ask you, and the only reason he checked your face first is that he loves you and he has learned to be careful with you.

That is not a verdict on your mothering. That is a thing that can change, and it does not change by you becoming a different person. It changes when the room stops needing to be read, because somebody in it started saying what is actually happening.

> Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates. > Zechariah 8:16

Truth and peace stand side by side in that verse, in the gates, in the public part of the house. You have both of them in you already, and they stopped being opposites in your kitchen the day Christ moved into you. Zechariah 8:16 sets them in one clause rather than making you pick, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into an actual family rather than leaving it as a fine idea.

Nothing here needs a conversation. Nothing here needs your children to notice, your partner to change, or anybody to say sorry for anything. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know what you have actually been doing, and to stop calling it by the wrong name inside your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true in your own kitchen was given to you, and this household cannot hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little they were holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of this family is His and always was.

  1. Weather in this kitchen, you are not peace and God never asked me to be you. Colossians 3:15 makes His peace the umpire in this house and it never made me the atmosphere, and these children are loved far too much to have to read me. In the name of Jesus I am handing the dial back.
  2. Fear that they will find me harder to live with, you have no say in this room tonight. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the mothers who kept it fair. I am in this kitchen as myself, and I am not managing one person in this house.
  3. Lord, You have been in this room through every evening I held level, and You never once mistook it for peace. I thank You, because Your word counted all of it and You have not held a single evening against me. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and my face is mine, and my children can have it back.
