Peace Worth MakingIsaiah 48:18

The Barometer in the Room

This message is for the eldest who learned at eleven to tell from the sound of a car door what kind of evening was coming, and who at forty-three is still reading rooms that have been entirely safe for twenty years

He was eleven when he learned to tell the whole evening from the car door.

Not from anything said. From the door. There was a way it shut that meant the night would be ordinary, and a way it shut that meant he needed to get his sister into the back room and put the television on low. He got it right nearly every time, and getting it right was the only thing he could do, so he got very good at it.

He is forty-three now. He has a job he likes, a wife who is kind, two kids who tell him things. The house he lives in has not had a bad night in it, not one, in twenty years.

And last Saturday somebody parked outside and shut a car door, and he was up out of the chair before he had decided anything, standing in his own front room with his heart going, listening.

His daughter asked him what was wrong. He said nothing, just thought I heard something. And that was true, and it was also the least true sentence he said all week.

Here is what he has never told a single person: the reading never stopped. He does it in every room he walks into. He does it in restaurants, in his own kitchen, at church. He does it at a table where every person present loves him, and he cannot find the switch.

Name the wound before anybody lifts anything

Let me say the true thing first, because a man does not need one more person skipping over it.

What was done to that boy was not his fault and it was not small. An eleven year old should not be able to grade a car door. He learned it because it was the only power he had in the house he was given, and he used it to keep his sister safe, and it worked. He was not weak. He was resourceful in a place that should never have required it.

You are a man who kept somebody safe with the only tool a child had, and heaven has that recorded exactly right. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves those crushed in spirit, which is the word for what a house like that does to a boy, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that in now to lift it off you rather than to hand it back.

And there is a second thing, and Isaiah says it in the tone of a man looking at a river.

O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.Isaiah 48:18

Peace like a river. Not peace like a held breath. A river is a thing that moves and keeps moving and does not have to be maintained by anybody standing on the bank watching it. What you have been producing in every room since you were eleven is the other thing entirely: a stillness that requires a man on duty to hold it.

The blessing is on the maker

Keeping the peace costs the room nothing and costs the watchman his whole nervous system. That is the test, and it comes out the same every time it is run.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

Look at who that blessing is for. Not the vigilant ones. Not the ones who saw it coming. The makers. And what is handed over is a family name and not a commendation, which means the standing you have been earning by never being caught off guard was already yours by a road nobody made you walk.

You have that name on you tonight, and it did not come from thirty years of watching and it does not lift the first time you miss something. Matthew 5:9 gives it as a naming rather than as pay, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds while a man is standing in his own front room with his heart going for no reason.

A keeper watches the door. A maker sits with his back to it, which is a thing that has to be learned and is not a thing to be ashamed of learning slowly.

Where your part ends

This gets said plainly, not gently. Making peace is never the same as handing yourself over to be hurt. If the room you are reading is a room that genuinely needs reading, then your body is doing its job and nothing here asks you to override it. Get yourself safe. Tell one real person who can actually do something. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and there is not one verse on this page that can be used to keep anybody where harm is.

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me.Psalm 27:5

Hiding is in the written word, and it is written as God's own idea. You are already inside a shelter that was not built out of your alertness, and the roof of it does not come off when you fall asleep. Psalm 27:5 puts the hiding in Him rather than in your reading of the room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man there whether he is scanning or not.

The breakthrough

The car door was never the enemy. The car door was information, and a boy used it correctly and lived. What is costing you now is not the skill. It is that the skill has no off position, and a man cannot be in a room as himself while he is also on duty in it.

You have a voice, and it was not given to you only for the emergency.

> Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. > Colossians 4:6

Grace and salt in the same sentence. Salt has bite in it. Paul is not describing a man who says nothing in order to keep a room calm. You have that speech in you already, and grace stopped being the opposite of saying something true the day Christ moved into you. Colossians 4:6 puts both in one line rather than making you choose between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies it in the moment rather than leaving you to prepare it in advance from the doorway.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here needs your wife to understand, your kids to notice, or your family of origin to acknowledge one single thing. What is being handed back is smaller and heavier than a resolution: the right to know what you have been doing since you were eleven, and to stop calling it peace inside your own head.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own life was given to you, and no house you grew up in can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little they were holding. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that family is His and always was.

  1. Held breath, you are not peace and God never counted you as peace. Isaiah 48:18 offers a peace like a river, which is a thing that moves without a man on the bank holding it, and this house has been safe for twenty years. In the name of Jesus I am stepping off watch.
  2. Fear that letting go is how somebody gets hurt, you have no authority in this front room. The Holy Spirit calls me a peacemaker and Matthew 5:9 puts that name on the makers, never on the boys who saw it coming. I am in this room as myself tonight, and I am not scanning one person in it.
  3. Lord, You were in that house when I was eleven and You have been at every window since. I thank You, because Your word says You never slumber and You have never once called my watching foolish. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and this chair is mine, and I am sitting down in it with my back to the door.
