Safe And HeldProverbs 22:24

The Verse They Read at Me

This message is for the man whose relative answers every attempt to say what is happening in that house by quoting a verse about peacemakers at him, and who has begun to flinch at Scripture itself

It is always the same verse and he has started to be able to feel it coming.

He will say a version of what is happening. Never the whole of it. A small piece, carefully chosen, the least alarming true thing he can find, offered to a relative he thought would want to know.

And there is a pause, and then the verse. Blessed are the peacemakers. Every single time, in a warm voice, with a hand on his arm.

It has happened eleven times over about three years, from four different people, and the effect of it is not what any of them intend. What it does is close the conversation. Once the verse has been said, there is nowhere else to go, because arguing with it would mean arguing with Scripture, and he is not going to do that.

So he says something to move the subject along, and he goes home, and the thing in that house continues.

And here is what he has never said out loud to a single person: he has started to flinch when somebody opens a Bible near him, and that frightens him more than the situation does.

Get one thing settled before anything else

Before a single further line, this needs saying plainly and it is the most important sentence on this page.

Nothing here asks you to stay anywhere unsafe. Nothing here asks you to make peace with harm. There is no verse in the Bible, and no sentence in this article, that requires you to hand yourself over to be hurt, and if you take nothing else away from this, take that.

If what is happening in that house is dangerous, get yourself safe first, before you work out what anything means. Tell one real person who can actually do something: a doctor, a police officer, a domestic abuse service in your country, a pastor with actual training rather than a warm opinion. Being safe is not a failure of peace. It is not a failure of faith. It is not the opposite of forgiveness.

You are not required to absorb this, and you never were. That is not somebody being permissive with you. Psalm 11:5 says the Lord's soul hates the one who loves violence, which is His own view stated plainly rather than an inference, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing that in now to get somebody out from underneath a verse rather than further beneath it.

What the written word actually says about staying near it

Here is the part that has been kept from you by eleven warm interruptions. The same book those four people are quoting has a great deal to say about proximity to a furious person, and none of it is what you have been read.

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.Proverbs 22:24

That is an instruction to keep distance. It is in the wisdom literature, it is unqualified, and the reason given is protective: a snare to your soul. Scripture is not neutral about being near somebody like that. It has a position, and the position is distance.

You are holding a written word that has already spoken on this, and it did not say what has been said to you. Proverbs 22:24 puts the counsel of distance inside the book rather than outside it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that to a man who has begun to flinch when a Bible is opened.

What that beatitude is actually doing

Matthew 5:9 blesses peacemakers. It is a real verse and it is a beautiful one and nobody is taking it off the page.

But look at what it does and does not do. It puts a blessing on the ones who make peace. It does not assign a person the job of producing peace out of a situation where the other party is not participating. It does not say blessed are the ones who stay. It does not say blessed are the ones who absorb, and it never once says blessed are the ones who are quiet about it.

A blessing is not an obligation. When a blessing gets used as an obligation, something has gone wrong with the handling and not with the verse.

You are blessed rather than assigned, and the difference between those two is the whole of what has been taken from you in eleven conversations. Scripture says in 2 Timothy 2:15 to rightly divide the word of truth, which assumes that a true verse can be handled wrongly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the dividing rightly in a man who has been handed it crooked.

The breakthrough

Those four relatives were almost certainly not being cruel. People reach for a verse when a situation frightens them and they have nothing else, and a verse said in a warm voice with a hand on an arm is what fear looks like when it is trying to be love.

That does not make it harmless. It has closed eleven conversations, and eleven conversations is a lot of ground for somebody to be alone on.

> Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. > Isaiah 1:17

Read what God asks His people to do about people who are being hurt. Relieve. Plead for. Seek judgment on behalf of. Not soothe, not quote, not close the subject. You are somebody God has instructed other people to stand up for, and that instruction is in the book right beside the verse that keeps getting read at you. Isaiah 1:17 puts the obligation on the ones around you rather than on you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves the right person toward somebody who has been told to be a peacemaker eleven times.

Nothing here tells you what to do about that house. This page does not know your situation and will not pretend to. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than advice: the verse handed back to you the right way round, and the flinching answered.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no relative can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with everybody in that house is His and always was.

  1. Verse they read at me, you are not a lid and God never wrote you as one. Proverbs 22:24 tells a man not to go with a furious one and calls the nearness a snare to his soul, and that is in the same book. In the name of Jesus I am taking you back off the door.
  2. Flinch that comes when somebody opens a Bible near me, you have no authority over me tonight. The Holy Spirit is the one who divides the word rightly, and 2 Timothy 2:15 says a true verse can be handled crooked and it was. I am here as myself today, and I am not absorbing this.
  3. Lord, You have been in that house and You have heard all eleven of those conversations. I thank You, because Your word tells other people to relieve the oppressed and plead for them, and You have never once told me to be quiet. Whatever You do with all of them is Yours, and the step in front of me is mine, and I am taking it.
