She told two people. It took her four months to work up to it and about eleven minutes to say.
They listened. They did not laugh at her and they did not tell her she was making it up, and she has held on to that.
And then, between them, over about twenty minutes, they arrived somewhere. They asked whether she had considered that the way she raises things might be part of it. They said that everybody plays a part. They said something about a soft answer turning away wrath, and they prayed with her, and the prayer was kind and it was about her heart.
She went home. She was gentler. She was extremely gentle for about seven months.
And here is what she has never said to anybody at all: it did not get smaller. It got worse in the way water finds a lower place, and she cannot work out whether that means they were wrong, or whether it means she was not gentle enough, and the second possibility is the one that visits her at four in the morning.
The plain thing, first and without softening
This is the sentence that matters most on this page and it goes before everything.
Nothing here asks you to stay anywhere unsafe or to make peace with harm. There is no verse in the Bible and no line in this article that requires you to hand yourself over to be hurt, and no amount of gentleness has ever been the reason harm continued.
If you are in danger, get safe first and sort out the theology afterward. Tell one real person who can actually do something: the police if there is danger tonight, a domestic abuse service where you live, a doctor, a lawyer, a counselor with training. Being safe is not a failure of peace and it is not a failure of gentleness.
You are not required to absorb this, and seven months of being gentle did not create an obligation to keep going. This is not encouragement dressed up as a fact. Psalm 11:5 says the Lord's soul hates the one who loves violence, which is His own position stated plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing it now to get a woman help rather than to send her home again.
Two things that were true in that room
Both of these need holding at once.
Those two people were not cruel. They listened for eleven minutes, they did not disbelieve you, and they prayed with genuine warmth. That is more than many people get and you were right to hold on to it.
And what they told you to do was wrong. Not maliciously wrong. Wrong the way advice is wrong when it is given by people who have never been in the situation, who are frightened by it, and who have one verse about a soft answer and no training whatsoever.
You are entirely free to be fair to them and still put down what they gave you, and doing both at once is not bitterness. Scripture puts this exact failure in the book in Ezekiel 13:22, where God speaks against those who with lies have made the heart of the righteous sad and strengthened the hands of the wicked, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can separate a kind person from an unsafe sentence.
Whose voice was that
Here is the question that has been running at four in the morning, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a gentle one.
That advice did not come from God.
You can test it the way Scripture tells you to test things. Does it match what the written word says elsewhere about violence and about the oppressed? It does not. Does it produce the fruit the Spirit produces? It produced seven months of a woman getting quieter and a situation getting worse. Does it put the weight on the person being harmed or on the one doing the harm? You already know the answer.
Because with lies ye have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life.Ezekiel 13:22
Whom I have not made sad. God draws a line in that verse between the sadness He is responsible for and the sadness somebody else caused with a wrong word, and He is not on the side of the wrong word.
You are holding a sentence God has already disowned, and He said so in the book before anybody ever said it to you. Ezekiel 13:22 puts the distinction in Scripture rather than in your own judgment about two people you trust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman set something down without having to condemn anybody to do it.
Those two people were never the enemy. What happened in that room is one of the commonest failures there is: frightened people with a verse and no training, doing their best with a situation they did not have the equipment for.
What is costing you is not their advice. It is that you took it as God's, and so every one of the last seven months has been read as evidence about your own gentleness rather than about anything else.
> To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. > Isaiah 8:20
There is a test and you are permitted to run it. Not on their motives. On the counsel itself, against what is written. You are allowed to weigh what you were told against the written word, and Isaiah puts that permission in your hands directly. Isaiah 8:20 gives the standard to the ordinary hearer rather than to the speaker, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the weighing with a woman rather than leaving her alone with it.
Nothing here tells you what to do about your situation. This page does not know it. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than advice: a sentence identified as not His, and the four in the morning question answered.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no counsel in a side room can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with everybody involved is His and always was.
- Advice I was sent home with, you were not His voice and God never said it to me. Ezekiel 13:22 has Him drawing a line between sadness He caused and sadness a wrong word caused, and He put Himself on the far side of it. In the name of Jesus I am setting you down.
- Question at four in the morning about whether I was gentle enough, you have no authority over me. The Holy Spirit is the one who proves all things, and Isaiah 8:20 hands me the standard directly and tells me to hold counsel up against the written word. I am here as myself today, and I am not absorbing this.
- Lord, You were in that side room for all twenty minutes and You have been in every one of the seven months since. I thank You, because Your word says You hate the love of violence and You have never once sent me home to be quieter. Whatever You do with all of them is Yours, and the one step in front of me is mine, and I am taking it today.
