The Night I Finally Told Somebody

This message is for the man who told one person for the first time at forty-eight, after decades of telling nobody, and who has spent the week since convinced he has done something irreversible and wrong

Tuesday, about half past nine, in a car outside a friend's house, with the engine off and neither of them getting out.

He had not planned it. That is what he keeps coming back to. There was no decision, no build up, no version of the sentence rehearsed on the way over. They had been talking about something else entirely and then there was a pause and he heard himself start.

He told him about forty percent of it. Which, given that he had told nobody anything for twenty-six years, is an enormous number.

His friend did not do anything wrong. He did not flinch and he did not fix it and he did not say a verse. He said, after a bit, that he was glad he had told him, and then he asked one question, and then he sat there while it went quiet.

And ever since Tuesday, this man has been in a state he cannot describe to anybody. Not relief. Something closer to the feeling of having pushed a boat off a bank.

Here is what he has never said out loud: he is forty-eight years old and he has spent a week convinced he has done something irreversible and wrong, and the thing he did was tell the truth to one person who loves him.

Say the necessary thing before anything else

This goes first on this page and it does not get softened.

Nothing here asks you to go anywhere unsafe or to make peace with harm. There is no verse in Scripture and no line in this article that requires anybody to hand himself over to be hurt, and nothing here will ever ask you to say one more word than you want to say.

If there is danger, get safe first. Tell one real person who can actually do something: the police if there is danger tonight, a domestic abuse service where you live, a doctor, a counselor with training in this. Being safe is not a failure of peace, and neither is telling.

You are not required to absorb this, and twenty-six years of doing it has not created an obligation for a twenty-seventh. That is not somebody being permissive with you. Psalm 11:5 says the Lord's soul hates the one who loves violence, which is His own stated position, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing that in now to steady a man in a car rather than to ask anything further of him.

Name what actually happened on Tuesday

Let me describe the event accurately, because you have spent a week describing it to yourself wrongly.

A man who had carried something alone for twenty-six years said about forty percent of it out loud to one safe person, who received it well and did not tell anybody. That is what happened. That is the whole of the event.

Nothing was set in motion. No process began. Nobody is coming. Your friend has not told anybody and there is no reason to think he will.

What you are feeling is not the consequence of a disclosure. It is what a body does when it puts down something it has held for twenty-six years. The shaking afterward is not a warning, it is the aftermath.

You are experiencing the aftermath of a good thing rather than the warning of a bad one, and the two feel almost identical from the inside. Scripture puts the naming of this in Psalm 55:22, where casting your burden on Him is met with sustaining rather than with consequence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a man which of the two he is standing in.

Alone was the danger, not telling

Read what Scripture actually says about being the only one who knows.

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.Ecclesiastes 4:10

Woe to him that is alone. That is where the woe is placed in that verse. Not on the one who told. On the one who has nobody.

For twenty-six years you have been in the exact condition Scripture calls out as the dangerous one, and on Tuesday, without planning it, you stopped being in it.

You are out of the category the written word warns about, and you were moved out of it in about eleven minutes in a parked car. Ecclesiastes 4:10 puts the danger in the aloneness rather than in the speaking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who arranged a pause in a conversation on a Tuesday that a man did not plan.

The breakthrough

Your friend was never the risk. He handled it about as well as a person can. He did not flinch, he did not solve it, he did not reach for a verse, and he has not repeated it.

What is costing you is not Tuesday. It is that twenty-six years of carrying something alone taught you that telling is the dangerous act, and your body still believes that even though the evidence from Tuesday says the opposite.

> Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. > James 5:16

One to another. That is the arrangement Scripture prescribes: not a broadcast, not a public account, one person to one person. You have done exactly the thing the written word describes, and the healing named in that verse is attached to it rather than to the silence. James 5:16 puts speaking to one another inside the mechanism of healing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was in a parked car at half past nine when it happened without being planned.

Nothing here asks you to tell anybody else, or to tell your friend the other sixty percent, or to do anything at all with this in the next month. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a plan: Tuesday named correctly, and the panic answered.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no twenty-six years of silence can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the whole of it is His and always was.

  1. Panic since Tuesday, you are not conviction and God never sent you. Ecclesiastes 4:10 puts the woe on the one who is alone when he falls, and on Tuesday I stopped being that man in about eleven minutes. In the name of Jesus I am not standing back up off this bench.
  2. Belief that telling is the dangerous act, you have no authority over me tonight. The Holy Spirit was in that car at half past nine, and James 5:16 puts confessing one to another inside the mechanism of healing rather than outside it. I am here as myself today, and I am not absorbing this.
  3. Lord, You were in that car with the engine off and You heard the forty percent. I thank You, because Your word says You are near to the broken hearted and You have never once called telling a betrayal. Whatever You do with the whole of it is Yours, and the one step in front of me is mine, and it can be small.
