Safe And HeldPsalm 91:3

They Say I Am Breaking Up the Family

This message is for the man who has decided not to go to a house where he is not safe, and who is being told by three relatives that he is the one breaking up the family, and who has started to wonder whether they are right

He stopped going in March. He did not announce it. He simply was not there for the first Sunday, and then the second, and by the fourth one people had started asking.

He gave a reason that was true and incomplete. He said he had a lot on.

Since then three people have said a version of the same thing to him, and the third one said it plainly, in a car, with real feeling: you are the one breaking up this family.

And he has not slept properly since.

Because it is not simply an accusation. It is the exact accusation that has always worked on him. He is the one who drives everybody, who remembers the birthdays, who kept the Christmases going for eleven years. Breaking up the family is the one thing he has organized his entire adult life against.

And here is what he has never said out loud to anybody: he knows precisely what happens in that house, and he still lies awake wondering whether the three of them are right and whether being safe is a luxury he has awarded himself at everybody else's expense.

The plain thing, first, without softening

Before anything else on this page.

Nothing here asks you to go back to that house or to make peace with harm. There is no verse in Scripture and no line in this article that requires a man to hand himself over to be hurt, whatever it costs a family calendar.

If you are in danger, get safe first and settle the rest afterward. Tell one real person who can actually do something: the police if there is danger, a domestic abuse service where you live, a doctor, a lawyer, a counselor with training. Being safe is not a failure of peace and it is not selfishness and it has never been either.

You are not required to absorb this, and being the one who holds that family together has never made you the exception. That is not somebody flattering you. Psalm 11:5 says the Lord's soul hates the one who loves violence, and it does not add an exemption for a family that is otherwise close, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing that in now to steady a man who has not slept since a conversation in a car.

Put the timeline back in order

Here is the thing three people have got backwards, and getting it the right way round is worth more to you than anything else on this page.

You did not break anything in March. In March you stopped attending something that was already broken. Those are two entirely different events and they happened years apart.

Whatever is happening in that house was happening in February, and last year, and the year before that. It was happening while you were still driving everybody and remembering the birthdays. Your absence did not create it. Your absence made it visible, which is not the same thing, and which is the actual reason three people are upset.

You are being handed the blame for a break that predates you, and the dates do not support the charge. Scripture is direct about who owns what in Ezekiel 18:20, where each account stays with the person whose name is on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a timeline back in the right order in a man's head at two in the morning.

The snare in the accusation

Look at the shape of what was said to you. It is not an argument, it is a lever, and it is a very well fitted one.

It works because it is aimed at the one thing you would never want to be. That is not an accident and it is not necessarily even conscious on their part, but it is precisely why it has cost you sleep and a reasoned objection would not have.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.Psalm 91:3

A snare is not a wall and it is not an army. It is a small hidden thing, set on the ground, shaped for one particular foot. Scripture names it as its own category of danger and promises deliverance from it specifically.

You are being delivered from a snare rather than talked out of a guilt, and God named that kind of trap in the book because it is real. Psalm 91:3 puts the deliverance in His hands rather than in your ability to argue back, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a man's foot out of something set exactly to his size.

The breakthrough

Those three relatives were never the enemy. They are frightened, they do not want to look at what is in that house, and blaming the person who left is very much easier than the alternative.

That is not wickedness. It is what people do. And it does not make the sentence true.

> The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. > Psalm 18:2

Seven names for shelter in one line, and every one of them is a place rather than a performance. You are standing inside all seven of them, and not one was issued on the basis of whether a family calendar survives. Psalm 18:2 puts the fortress in God rather than in your reputation as the one who holds everybody together, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the sheltering while three people are disappointed in you.

Nothing here tells you whether to go back, and it never will. This page does not know your situation. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a defense: a timeline in the right order, and a snare named for what it is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no relative in a car can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with all of them is His and always was.

  1. Blame for this division, you are not mine and God never put my name on you. Psalm 91:3 names a snare as its own kind of trap, small and hidden and shaped for one foot, and promises deliverance from exactly that. In the name of Jesus I am stepping out of you.
  2. Question at two in the morning about whether being safe is a luxury, you have no authority over my sleep. The Holy Spirit is at work in every one of them, and Ezekiel 18:20 leaves every account with the person whose name is actually on it. I am in this family as myself, and I am not the break.
  3. Lord, You have been in that house every Sunday for years, including all the ones before March. I thank You, because Your word gives seven names for shelter and not one of them depends on a family calendar. Whatever You do with all of them is Yours, and the one step in front of me is mine, and I am taking it today.
