It arrives somewhere around the twenty minute mark and it always has.
She does not plan it. It comes out of her the way a sneeze does. Her daughter will be halfway through something about work, or the children, or a plan for the summer, and the question will simply be in the room.
It is not a cruel question. That is what makes this hard. It is a question about her daughter's wellbeing, asked by a woman who has been worried about that particular thing for nine years, and every version of it that has ever been asked has come out of genuine love.
Her daughter's face does the same thing every time. A small closing. Not anger. Something more like a shutter.
And the visits have been getting shorter. Two hours became ninety minutes became an hour and a bit, and last month it was fifty minutes and there was a reason given about the traffic.
She has known for about a year what the question is doing and she still cannot stop it. And in March she finally said the true thing to herself, in the parking lot outside the supermarket of all places.
Here is what she has never said to a living soul: asking that question is the only way she knows how to tell her daughter that she loves her, and if she stops, she does not know what will come out of her mouth instead.
The question is love and it is also the problem
Let me hold both of those at once, because dropping either one makes this useless.
That question is love. It genuinely is. Nine years of worry about a specific thing does not come from control, it comes from a mother lying awake, and the asking is the only channel that has ever been available for it.
And it is closing a door. You have watched it close, twenty minutes into every visit, for years. Both of those are true and neither cancels the other.
You are not an intrusive mother, and nine years of worry is not the same as nine years of interference. That is not a kind reading somebody is offering you. Isaiah 49:15 has God comparing His own faithfulness to a mother's, which is a comparison He would not have chosen if a mother's worry were a small or a shameful thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising this now to give you a channel rather than to shut you up.
And James puts the order in one line, and the order is the whole of it.
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.James 1:19
Swift to hear comes first. Not silent. Swift, which is an active word, as active as speaking, and requiring more of a person rather than less.
The verse is not telling you to have nothing to say. It is telling you where the energy goes.
Giving up the question is not giving up the love
You are not being asked to stop caring about the thing you are worried about. Nobody could do that and you would not want a mother who could.
You are being asked to stop using that particular sentence as the container for it, and to find out what else the love can travel in.
That is genuinely frightening, because the question is a known quantity and whatever comes next is not.
You are able to love that woman in a way you have not learned yet, and the capacity for it is already in you rather than being something you have to acquire. Scripture puts it plainly in Romans 5:5, where the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, and the Spirit named there is the one who supplies it rather than leaving a mother to manufacture a new sentence on the drive over.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Going first is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If the thing you are worried about is a genuine danger to your daughter rather than a difficult situation she is managing, then that is a different matter and this page does not tell you to go quiet about it. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.
And this too: nothing here requires a conversation. You are not being asked to explain to your daughter that you are trying something. She will not be told, and that is deliberate.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.Psalm 23:1
I shall not want. That is a sentence about a person who is being looked after rather than one who is managing something. You are already provided for in the exact place where your worry lives, and the provision does not run through your mouth. Psalm 23:1 puts the shepherding in God rather than in your vigilance about your daughter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual watching over her while a mother says nothing about it.
Your daughter was never the enemy, and the shutter on her face is not rejection. It is a grown woman protecting one specific area, and she protects it from you the same way she protects it from everybody, and none of that is about how much she loves you.
What is costing you is not the worry. It is that the worry has only one exit, and every time it uses that exit, fifteen minutes come off the visit.
> A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it! > Proverbs 15:23
In due season. There is timing in that verse, which means there are seasons where a true and loving word is simply not due yet. You are able to hold a good word until its season, and the holding is wisdom rather than dishonesty. Proverbs 15:23 puts the goodness of a word partly in its timing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows the season and will tell you when it is.
Nothing here tells you to stop worrying, and nothing here tells you to raise it a different way instead. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a technique: one whole visit, and the discovery of what else your love can travel in.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no visit can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with my daughter is His and always was.
- Question I ask every visit, you are not love and God never put you in my mouth. James 1:19 puts swift to hear first and slow to speak second, and swift is an active word that asks more of a person rather than less. In the name of Jesus I am letting you go past me.
- Fear that without the question I have nothing to say to her, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is at work in my daughter today, and Romans 5:5 says the love of God is poured into a heart by Him and not manufactured on a drive over. I am her mother today, and I am swift to hear.
- Lord, You have been at every one of those visits and You have seen her face close at twenty minutes. I thank You, because Your word compares Your own faithfulness to a mother's and You have never once called my worry interference. Whatever You do with her is Yours, and my mouth is mine, and it is Yours today.
James 1:19
