The under elevens are two nil down and nobody minds very much, because the sun has come out low over the trees and the pitch is soft and somebody's dog is loose again behind the far goal.
Gary stands at the halfway line with his hands in his coat pockets, the way he stands every Saturday. The same seven parents are strung along the rope with him. Two camp chairs, a bag of orange segments for half time, an inhaler in somebody's coat, a referee's whistle that goes off far too close to your ear when he runs past.
Somewhere in the second half, Annette says it. She says it kindly. She has been saying it kindly for three years, in the small settled voice people use for a sympathy that has long since been agreed by everybody. After everything you did for your mum. And him turning up at the end like that. Honestly, Gary. You were the one who was there.
And Gary does what Gary does. He keeps his eyes on the game and he says, "Ah, well."
Which is not agreeing. Which is exactly agreeing.
Here is what Annette does not know, and it is why his stomach goes cold every time she is kind to him. It is true that he did the nights and the hospital runs and the forms, for three years, until their mother went into the home. It is also true that in the second year his brother offered, twice, and Gary said there was no need, and never passed on which weekends were free, because by then being the one who did it was the only thing in that family that was reliably his. That part has never once been in the version. Seven people have the version. Not one of them has that part.
He knows to the penny what putting it back would cost. Not a row; he could take a row. It is Annette looking at him differently outside the shop. It is losing the one sentence he has been standing on since the second year, which is that he was the one who was there and everybody knows it. Hand that back and he is just a man who did his best and got tired and shut the door on his own brother, which is a much harder thing to be at a football pitch on a Saturday morning.
You may not have a brother. But there is a first step in front of you with a price on it, and unlike most people you can name that price exactly, which is the worst part of your situation rather than the best, because a vague cost can be argued down and yours cannot. You know what it takes off you. You know who looks at you differently afterwards. And you have been standing at your own halfway line for a while now, saying ah well, and hating the sound of your own voice saying it.
Nobody Is Going To Tell You It Is Cheap
I am not going to talk you out of the price. It is a real price, your count of it is right, and if I stood here and told you it costs nothing I would be lying to you before we had properly started.
That is why the beatitude is worth something. Blessed are the peacemakers, Jesus said, and He did not say blessed are the ones who keep things quiet. Keeping the peace is free, which is exactly why so many of us do it for thirty years. Making it costs the maker. That is the whole difference, and everybody standing in your situation knows the difference in their body long before they can put it in words.
So here is the promise you actually need, and it is not the one about the cost being small. It is about who is standing where.
"For you shall not go out in haste, and you shall not go in flight, for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard."Isaiah 52:12
Read the geography of that. In front of you, and behind you. The front half is the one people quote. The back half is the one you need, because the thing you are genuinely afraid of is not in front of you at all. It is behind you: what gets said once the version has been corrected, who repeats it, how it sounds in a shop doorway, whether the seven people along that rope quietly re-sort you.
You are covered on the side you cannot watch. That is written down, and it is not my encouragement dressed up as a promise: the same God who walks out in front is named as the one who closes up behind, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence like that arrive in a man's chest on a Saturday morning as something present rather than historical.
And notice the pace He sets. Not in haste. Not in flight. Nobody in that verse is running. There is no date on this, nobody is owed your step by the end of the month, and a step taken in a panic is not braver than a step taken slowly.
The Rudder Turns The Other Way
There is a picture in James that belongs to you, and it is not the one about the fire.
"Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the pilot directs."James 3:4
The tongue is the rudder. It is the smallest working part of the whole vessel and the ship goes where it says. Now hold that gently, because the point is not that you steered a family with a story, though something like that is often true of all of us. The point is the mechanism. The same rudder turns the ship the other way. It does not need to be bigger to do it. It never needed to be dramatic. It is the same small thing, moved the other way, in a room where nobody is expecting it.
You have been given the authority to move it, and it was given rather than earned. This is where I want you standing before you take one step. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and it is written that God has given us the ministry of reconciliation, which means the ministry of going first. The words of a person like you carry weight for exactly that reason and no other. It is not your nerve doing the work, it is not your track record, and it is certainly not your reputation along that rope. It is His Spirit carrying a true sentence further than the sound of it goes.
And hear the other half before you move an inch. Nothing here requires a conversation. There is no phone call in this article, no script, no approach to rehearse in the car, and no person you have to face for this to count. Your step is the one that belongs entirely to you, and the best ones usually need nobody's cooperation at all.
What it costs you is seen. Scripture says that in the Lord your labor is not in vain, and that is not a slogan about effort in general. It means the thing you spend going first is counted, and it is counted by the only one whose count settles anything. It is not spent for nothing, and it is not spent for a result He never promised you either.
Something can turn here, this morning, in one small movement that nobody in your life has to agree to.
You are not being sent out ahead on your own. The written word puts God in front and behind, and His Spirit is with you in the seconds before you speak, which are the only seconds that ever actually frighten anybody. Go slowly. Go covered.
And this next thing outranks everything else on this page. If the person on the other side of your situation is somebody it would not be safe for you to be near, then nothing here is about them, and no first step in this article means going anywhere near harm. Peace with a person is not always available. That is not your failure and it is not a smaller life; it is sometimes simply the truth, and God is not standing over you with a clipboard about it. If things at home have got to the place where you are frightened, or where carrying on feels beyond you, then the brave step today is a human voice: emergency services, your doctor, or a crisis line, this afternoon.
For the rest, the step is small, and it is yours, and it is available before lunch.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car, on the walk, wherever you actually are. The authority to go first was given to you in Christ, and Scripture is the ground under it while His Spirit is the breath in it. What comes of your step, who softens, who never does, is His to decide, and none of that is being loaded onto you this morning.
- Price on this step, you are real and you are counted, and you are not a reason to stand still. It is written that in the Lord no labor like this is spent for nothing, and I would rather pay you than keep the version I bought with you. I am going first today, at a walk, not at a run.
- Idea that being the one who was wronged is the only place I have left, you are not my standing and you never were. In the name of Jesus I hand you back, because Christ is in me and that is my standing, and it was never a story seven people happened to agree on. The rudder is small, and it turns the other way just as easily.
- Lord, You go out in front of me and You close up behind me, exactly as it is written, and Your Spirit is with me in the seconds before I speak. I thank You, because You have never once sent one of Your own out ahead alone. You see what this costs, You are not asking me to pretend it is cheap, and You are already standing on the side I cannot see.
Isaiah 52:12
