The Only Place I Ever Mattered

This message is for the woman who has hosted the family holiday for thirty-one years, who has understood that both branches could come if it were held somewhere neutral, and who knows that hosting it is the only place in that family where she has ever mattered

Thirty-one years she has done it. Every one of them in this kitchen, and the last nine of them with half the family missing.

Since the split it has gone like this: her side comes, and the other branch does not, because they will not walk into this house. Nobody has ever said that out loud. They simply have their own now, on the same day, forty miles away.

In June her granddaughter said something without thinking about it. She said, if it was at the hall in town, everybody would come. Just as a fact, the way a young person says a thing that has been obvious to her for years.

And it is true. She knew it was true the second she heard it. Neutral ground, nobody's kitchen, twenty-eight people in one room for the first time in nine years.

She has thought about it every week since and she cannot make herself say it, and she has finally worked out why, and the reason is not pride and it is not stubbornness.

Here is what she has never said out loud in her life: cooking that meal is the only thing she has ever done in this family that made her necessary, and if she hands it over she does not know what she is to them.

Say the actual cost out loud

Let me not walk past this quickly, because most of what gets written about generosity would skip straight over the real thing and land somewhere useless.

You would not be giving up a meal. Anybody can give up a meal. You would be giving up the one position in that family where you are needed rather than merely loved, and those are different, and only one of them makes a person feel safe.

Thirty-one years of being the one who does it is thirty-one years of never having to wonder whether they would still come round if you had nothing to offer. Handing it over is handing over the answer to a question you have never had to ask.

You are somebody whose fear here is entirely reasonable, and it is not vanity and nobody is going to call it vanity. Nobody is being kind to you here. Psalm 139:1 says He has searched you and known you, which means the actual reason underneath the reason is fully visible to Him and always has been, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to hold it rather than to hurry you past it.

And Jesus describes the whole mechanism in one sentence about a seed.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.John 12:24

Read what He does not do. He does not say the grain will not have to go in the ground. He does not say it will be painless. He says a grain that stays on the shelf stays exactly what it is, alone, and that the going in is the only route to the other thing.

That is not a promise about your holiday. It is a description of how anything has ever grown.

Handing it over is not the same as being nothing

You would still be the one who taught three of those women to cook. You would still be the one who knows every birthday. You would still be the person your grandson rings when he is worried and does not want to worry his mother.

Those are not smaller than a meal. They are simply less visible, and thirty-one years of the visible one has hidden them from you.

You are already necessary to that family in six ways that have nothing to do with a stove, and none of them get handed over with the meal. Scripture puts it plainly in 1 Corinthians 12:22, where the members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman her own place in a body rather than leaving her to work it out from how busy she was.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Going first is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If there is a reason those two branches should not be in one room, then they should not be in one room, and nothing on this page pushes anybody through a door. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, always.

And this too, plainly: nothing here requires a conversation. There is no phone call to make and no announcement to prepare. The step at the bottom of this page happens on a piece of paper nobody else will ever see.

Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.Isaiah 41:14

He calls him a worm and then says I will help you, in the same breath, without a word of scolding in between. You are helped in the exact condition you are actually in rather than in the one you would like to be in. Isaiah 41:14 puts the helping in God rather than in your having a better motive first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it while a woman is still afraid of being nobody.

The breakthrough

The meal was never the enemy. Thirty-one years of that kitchen is one of the great works of that family and half of them do not know how much of their childhood is inside it.

What is costing you is not the cooking. It is that being needed and being loved got welded together somewhere a long way back, and you have been maintaining the weld with a stove for three decades.

> But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. > 1 Corinthians 1:27

He chooses the ones with nothing to bring. That is the pattern and it is repeated all through the book. You are chosen on a basis that has nothing at all to do with usefulness, and the choosing happened before you ever cooked anything. 1 Corinthians 1:27 puts the choosing in God's hands and on the opposite basis to the one you have been living on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in the body rather than only true on paper.

Nothing here tells you to hand it over this year, or by any date. There is no deadline on this page. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a decision about a hall: the beginning of an answer to a question you have been afraid to ask.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, right where you are sitting. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own worth was given to you, and no family can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living instead of loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not set it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He set it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a woman's faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the rest with Him, because whatever He does with both branches of that family is His and always was.

  1. Table I have set for thirty-one years, you are not my worth and God never made you my name. John 12:24 says a grain that stays on the shelf stays alone, and it never once pretended the going in was painless. In the name of Jesus I am done being held up by you.
  2. Fear that without the cooking I am nobody in this family, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit shows me my own place in a body, and 1 Corinthians 1:27 says God chooses on the opposite basis to the one I have been living on. I am here as myself today, and I am necessary without a stove.
  3. Lord, You have been in this kitchen for thirty-one Christmases and You know the reason underneath the reason. I thank You, because Your word says You have searched me and known me and You have never once called this vanity. Whatever You do with both branches of them is Yours, and the names on this paper are mine.
