Courage To BeginJoshua 1:9

The Sentence He Has Never Said

This message is for the man who knows the one true sentence that would change the temperature of his whole family, and who can name to the exact detail what saying it will cost him with three of his uncles

He knows the sentence. That is the thing worth understanding about him first. He is not confused, he is not searching, he is not waiting for clarity.

He has known it for about four years. It is fourteen words long. It is true, and it is not cruel, and if it were said out loud in that courtyard the temperature of the whole family would change, and everybody there knows that except the three people it would land on.

He also knows the bill, to the item. His oldest uncle will not speak to him for at least a year, probably longer. His mother will be caught in the middle and will have to answer for him, which she does not deserve. He will lose the standing he has spent fifteen years building in that family, the standing that means people listen when he speaks.

So it is not courage in the abstract that he is short of. He is a brave enough man. He has faced worse in other rooms.

What he is short of is any reason to believe that spending that particular amount would buy anything at all.

And here is what he has never said out loud: he is not afraid of the cost. He is afraid of paying it and having nothing change.

The cost is real and nobody is going to pretend otherwise

Let me say the first true thing plainly, because most of what gets said about courage skips it and the skipping is what makes it useless.

That bill is real. Every item on it is accurate. A year of your uncle's silence is a year of your uncle's silence, and there is no reframing that makes it small. Your mother genuinely will be put in a position she has not earned. The standing you would lose took fifteen years to build and it is not vanity, it is the thing that lets you be useful in that family.

Nobody on this page is going to tell you the price is lower than you think it is. It is exactly what you think it is.

You are not exaggerating, and the arithmetic you have been carrying for four years is correct. That is not a kind reading somebody is offering you. Luke 14:28 has Jesus commending the man who sits down first and counts the cost before he builds, which makes your four years an act of obedience rather than of cowardice, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to hand you something rather than to hurry you.

And what Joshua is given, at the point where the cost was also entirely clear, is not a discount.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:9

Read what is actually offered in that verse. Not a smaller river. Not fewer walled cities. Not a guarantee about how the campaign will go. The whole of what is given is a person, going with him, wherever he goes.

That is the offer. It has always been the offer. God does not make the crossing cheaper. He makes it accompanied.

Going first is not the same as being promised a result

Here is the thing nobody says out loud, and it is the real weight you are carrying: you might say it and nothing might change. Your uncle might not speak to you for a year and then a second year. The family might not warm by one degree.

That is possible. This page will not pretend otherwise, because a page that promises you the outcome has lied to you, and you would know it was lying and you would stop reading.

You are covered for the cost rather than insured against the result, and that is a different and better arrangement than the one you have been hoping for. Scripture puts it plainly in Hebrews 6:10, where God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a man steady in the year afterward, which is the part nobody plans for.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Going first is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If saying that sentence in that courtyard would put you or anybody else at risk, do not say it, and let no line on this page be used to push you. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.

And a second thing, just as plain. Nothing here requires a conversation. If the only step you ever take is the one at the bottom of this page, which nobody will ever witness, that is a real step and it is enough.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?Psalm 27:1

Two questions, both of them left open on purpose. You are already carrying the strength that verse names, and it was issued before you decided anything about that courtyard. Psalm 27:1 puts the strength in God rather than in your resolve, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies it on the actual day rather than in advance where you could inspect it.

The breakthrough

The uncles were never the enemy. Three men who would go cold for a year are three men who care enough about something to go cold, and there are families where nobody would even notice the sentence.

What is holding you is not fear of the cost. You have already established that. It is that you have been waiting to be shown the result before you pay, and that is a trade nobody has ever been offered.

> And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. > Galatians 6:9

Read the shape of that. The reaping is real and it is promised, and the timing of it is described as a season rather than as a date, and the whole thing is put in God's hands and not in a family's. You are inside a promise about what is spent rather than about when it lands, and the spending has never once been wasted. Galatians 6:9 puts the harvest in due season rather than in your control, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man from fainting in the part of it that has no visible progress.

Nothing here tells you to say it this week, or by any date at all. There is no deadline on this page and there never will be. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a strategy: a companion for the crossing, and a first step that costs nobody's cooperation but your own.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true in your own family was given to you, and no uncle can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with all three of those men is His and always was.

  1. Price on this sentence, you are real and God has already looked straight at you. Joshua 1:9 does not offer a smaller river, it offers a person going with a man wherever he goes, and that is the whole of what was ever promised. In the name of Jesus I am done waiting to be shown the result first.
  2. Fear of paying it all and nothing changing, you have no authority over me tonight. The Holy Spirit is at work in all three of those men, and Galatians 6:9 puts the harvest in due season rather than on a date I get to see. I am in this family as myself, and I am not buying an outcome.
  3. Lord, You have been in this courtyard for four years while I counted. I thank You, because Your word commends the man who sits down and counts before he builds, and You have never once called my counting cowardice. Whatever You do with those three is Yours, and the sentence is mine, and tonight it has been said out loud once.
