Courage To Begin1 Corinthians 6:7

The Thing He Has to Stop Being Right About

This message is for the man who is genuinely and demonstrably right about what happened six years ago, who could prove it, and who has understood that the first step available to him is to stop being right about it out loud

He has it in a folder. That is the detail that tells you everything.

Six years ago something happened in that family involving a decision, a sum of money, and a conversation that two people remember differently. He was right about it. Not approximately right. Right in the way that could be demonstrated, with dates, with two messages he kept, and with one thing his sister said in front of four witnesses.

He has never produced it. He has never once slapped the folder on a table. He is not that man.

But he keeps it. And more than that, he holds the position. In small ways, in ordinary conversations, he keeps the shape of being the one who was right, and everybody in that family knows the shape by heart.

He worked something out in the spring, standing in his own kitchen, and it has not left him since. The freeze is not being kept up by the person who was wrong. It is being kept up by the folder, and by a man who has never opened it and never let anybody forget it exists.

And here is what he has not said out loud to anybody: he is going to have to stop being right about it, out loud, permanently, without any of them ever admitting anything, and he does not know how a man does that.

You are right, and that is not being taken away from you

Let me be careful here, because there is a bad version of this teaching and it does real damage.

Nobody is telling you that you were wrong. You were not. Nobody is asking you to say you were, or to pretend the dates are unclear, or to develop a convenient fog about a conversation you remember perfectly. That would be a lie, and God has never required a lie in order to make peace.

The cost being described is different and it is heavier: you are being invited to be right and to stop trading on it. To keep knowing, and to stop being the man who is known for knowing.

You are correct about what happened and heaven has never once disputed it. That is not a concession somebody is making to you. Psalm 37:6 says He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday, which puts the vindication in His hands and on His timing rather than requiring yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to free a man's hands rather than to call him a liar.

And Paul, writing to a church that was taking each other to court and winning, asks a question that is genuinely startling.

Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?1 Corinthians 6:7

He does not say they were wrong about the facts. He assumes they are right, and he says the winning is itself the failure. Why not rather take wrong. That is a real question addressed to people with a good case, and it has never had a comfortable answer.

Laying it down is not the same as saying it did not happen

You will still remember. That does not change and nothing here asks it to. The folder can even stay in the garage.

What changes is that you stop being the one who is right at that table. You stop the small shape of it: the pause before you agree, the particular way you say her name, the sentence you never finish. Everybody in that family can read those the way they read the weather, and they have been reading them for six years.

You are able to hold something true without holding it over anybody, and those two were never the same act. Scripture puts it plainly in Proverbs 25:2, where it is the glory of God to conceal a thing, and the Holy Spirit is at work in every person in that family without your evidence being entered into anything.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly and do not soften it. Going first is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If what happened six years ago involved genuine harm to somebody rather than a disagreement about a decision, then this is not a case to lay down and nothing on this page says otherwise. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.

And this too: nothing here requires a conversation. There is no meeting to arrange and no speech to give. The whole of the step at the bottom of this page happens where nobody can see it.

Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.Psalm 37:5

Commit it. Hand the whole file over rather than filing it somewhere better. You are handing something to somebody who is entirely capable of holding it, and He has never once mislaid a case. Psalm 37:5 puts the bringing to pass in His hands rather than in your evidence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual carrying while a man's hands are empty.

The breakthrough

Your sister was never the enemy. She remembers it differently, and people who remember a hard thing differently are usually protecting something rather than lying about it, and you are not in a position to see what she is protecting.

What is costing you is not the wrong that was done. It is that being right has become a possession, and possessions have to be maintained, and you have been maintaining this one for six years in a family that has not had a proper Christmas in all of them.

> Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. > Matthew 5:9

The blessing lands on the maker, and making costs the maker something, and this is what it costs in your particular case. You are already called a child of God, and that name was not issued on the strength of a case you are holding. Matthew 5:9 hands out a family name rather than a judgment, and the Holy Spirit is the witness to it in you, which is why it holds on the day a man stops being right out loud.

Nothing here tells you to say anything to your sister. Nothing here promises that laying it down will thaw one degree of that family, because nobody can promise that. What is being handed to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: your hands back, and a step nobody will ever see you take.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no family can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with the rest of that family is His and always was.

  1. Case I have been carrying, you are watertight and God never asked me to keep holding you. 1 Corinthians 6:7 asks people with a good case why they do not rather take wrong, and the question was aimed at the ones who were winning. In the name of Jesus I am putting you out of reach.
  2. Fear that letting it go means it never happened, you have no authority in this garage. The Holy Spirit is at work in every one of them, and Psalm 37:6 says God brings a man's righteousness out as the light in His own time. I am at that table as myself, and I am right and I am quiet.
  3. Lord, You were in that room six years ago and You are the only one who heard all of it. I thank You, because Your word says vengeance is Yours and You have never once needed my folder to know what happened. Whatever You do with the rest of them is Yours, and my hands are mine, and they are empty tonight.
