It came in at twenty past four with no words attached, which is how she knows exactly what it is for.
A screenshot. A message somebody on one side of her family sent to somebody else, forwarded to her by a third person, cropped so that the reply is not visible. And the whole thing is sent without a single word of explanation, because none is needed. The expectation is fully built into the picture.
She is supposed to be appalled. That is the deal. She looks, she feels the thing she is meant to feel, and she sends back some version of I cannot believe her, and the sender feels less alone for about ninety minutes.
She gets two or three of these a week now, from both directions. She has become a place where evidence gets deposited.
Last week she caught herself doing something that worried her: she had started composing her reaction before she had finished reading, because she knows the shape of the reaction that is wanted.
And here is what she has never said to anybody: she does not think she is being asked for her opinion at all. She thinks she is being used as a wire, and she cannot work out how to stop being one without making an announcement she does not want to make.
The feeling arrived before you did
Let me name what is happening mechanically before anything else, because nobody who sends you these has ever thought about it.
A cropped screenshot with no words is not information. It is an instruction. It says: have this feeling with me. And when it works, the sender gets a small, real relief, because outrage shared is outrage halved for about an evening.
Nobody involved is a monster. Everybody sending you these is in pain and reaching for the nearest warm body. That is ordinary and human and it is also, in aggregate, doing something to you.
You are not cold for noticing, and you were right to feel that something in this has stopped being about you at all. That is not a kind opinion somebody is offering. Proverbs 20:5 says counsel in the heart of a person is like deep water and one of understanding will draw it out, which is precisely what you have just done to yourself at a kitchen counter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brought it up rather than letting it run another five years.
And Proverbs describes the mechanism with unusual precision.
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.Proverbs 26:20
That verse is not about blame. It is about fuel. A fire does not go out because somebody argues it into submission. It goes out because nothing more is put on it. And the wood, in that image, is not the anger. The wood is the carrying.
Declining is not the same as taking sides
You are not being asked to defend anybody. You are not being asked to disagree with the screenshot. You are simply not required to have the feeling on demand, and you are not required to move the picture one inch further than your own phone.
That will be noticed eventually, and it may be resented for a while. But it is not a position on the dispute. It is a decision about what passes through you.
You are free to receive something and let it stop with you, and that was never the same as taking anybody's part. Scripture puts it plainly in Proverbs 17:9, where covering a matter seeks love while repeating it separates friends, and the Holy Spirit is at work in every person in that family without a single forward from you being required.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly, not gently. Declining to carry something is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody to stay anywhere unsafe. If what is being sent to you is genuinely frightening, or if it describes somebody being hurt, that is not gossip and this article does not treat it as gossip. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every time.
The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.Psalm 18:2
Seven names for shelter in one verse. You are standing inside all seven of them already, and not one of them was issued on the basis of how well you handle a group of relatives. Psalm 18:2 puts the fortress in God rather than in your management of a phone, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to be still while a screen is lit up in front of her.
The screenshots were never the enemy. Behind every one of them is a person who feels alone and wants somebody to agree that what happened to them was real.
What has to change is not your compassion for that. It is one small assumption, which is that receiving something obliges you to move it, and that having no reaction is the same as having no heart.
> Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another. > Ephesians 4:31
Read what stands in the second half. Kindness, in the same breath, immediately. You are able to be kind and still refuse to carry something, because Ephesians 4:31 puts those two in one sentence rather than in opposition. The written word joins them there deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the warmth so that declining does not come out cold.
Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here asks you to tell anybody you have stopped, announce a policy, or leave any thread. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to notice that you have been made a wire, and to quietly stop conducting.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and no relative can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with both halves of that family is His and always was.
- Screenshot on my phone, you are going no further and God never made me the wire. Proverbs 26:20 says a fire goes out where the wood stops arriving, and I am not the woodpile for this family. In the name of Jesus I am letting you stop here.
- Fear that not reacting makes me cold, you have no authority in this kitchen. The Holy Spirit is at work in every one of them, and Ephesians 4:31 puts kindness in the very same sentence as putting evil speaking away. I am in this family as myself today, and I am not conducting one thing.
- Lord, You see every message that has ever come to this phone and every one I have forwarded. I thank You, because Your word says You rejoice over me with singing and You have never once wanted me for what I could carry. Whatever You do with the whole of them is Yours, and this afternoon is mine, and the fire goes out here.
