It comes about four minutes after she walks in the door, and it comes in a voice designed to sound like it does not matter.
So. How were they.
And then, if she gives a plain answer, the follow up, which is the actual question and always was: did they say anything about us.
It happens on both sides. She drives over to her father's people on a Saturday and her mother's people ask on the Sunday. She drives over to her mother's people and her father's people ask on the Tuesday. She has been doing this loop for two years and she can now hear the question coming before it is asked, in the small pause before it, like the click before a track starts.
She has never fully answered it. But she has never fully refused it either. She does the thing everybody in her position does: she gives a slightly softened, mostly true, carefully edited nothing, and everybody accepts it, and everybody knows it is edited.
And here is what she has never said out loud to anybody: she has begun to dread the drive home more than she dreads either visit, and she has started thinking of herself as a courier.
The question is the job
Let me name the mechanism plainly, because nobody on either side of that family has ever looked at it.
That question is not curiosity. Curiosity would ask what they had for dinner. That question is asking for intelligence, and the reason it is asked in a light voice is that everybody involved knows perfectly well what it is.
And a person who is asked for intelligence twice a week, for two years, has a job. Nobody handed you a title. Nobody had to. Two families with a gap between them need somebody who crosses it, and the crossing itself is what created the role.
You are not disloyal for having noticed what is being asked of you, and you were never given a choice about becoming the crossing. That is not a kind reading somebody is offering. Psalm 139:3 says He compasses your path and your lying down and is acquainted with all your ways, which includes every one of those drives home, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift something rather than to hand you a charge.
And Proverbs puts a name on the other option, and the name is a compliment.
A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.Proverbs 11:13
A faithful spirit. Not a cold one, not a secretive one. Faithful. Scripture treats the person who does not carry the matter as the trustworthy one in the room, which is exactly the reverse of how it feels at that front door on a Sunday.
Editing is not the same as declining
What you have been doing is the hardest possible version of this, and it is worth seeing why. A carefully edited nothing costs you more than either extreme would.
Refusing outright would cost you a scene once. Telling everything would cost you your conscience. Editing costs you a small amount of both, every single time, twice a week, for two years.
You are free to answer a different question than the one you were asked, and that was never a lie or a betrayal of anybody. Scripture puts it plainly in Colossians 4:6, where speech is to be with grace and seasoned with salt so that you know how to answer every person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the wording at the door rather than leaving you to rehearse it in the car.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly and do not soften it. Declining to carry something is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody to stay anywhere unsafe. If what is being said in either house is genuinely frightening, or describes somebody being hurt, that is not gossip and this page does not treat it as gossip. Get whoever is at risk safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: safety comes before peace, every single time.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.Psalm 91:4
Covered, by something that was not built by you and cannot be withdrawn by a relative. You are under a covering already, and it does not lift on the evening you decline to answer. Psalm 91:4 puts the shelter in God rather than in staying useful to both houses, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to stand in a doorway and change the subject.
The question was never the enemy. Behind it, on both sides, is a frightened person who wants to know whether they are still spoken of kindly, and that is one of the most human things there is.
What is costing you is not the asking. It is that you have accepted the job of answering, in edited form, and that the editing has become who you are on a Sunday evening.
> Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. > Ephesians 4:25
Members one of another. That is the ground the verse stands on, and it cuts both ways: what is said in one house is not raw material for another one, because they are all members of the same body whether they are currently speaking or not. You are part of one family rather than a channel between two, and that membership was settled long before the split. Ephesians 4:25 grounds the honesty in belonging rather than in disclosure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to be truthful without being a courier.
Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here asks you to confront anybody, explain a new policy, or say one word about this at either door. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a resolution: the right to know that you were made a courier by circumstance, and to stop making the delivery.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and neither house can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with both of those houses is His and always was.
- Question at the door, you get nothing from me tonight and God never made me the courier. Proverbs 11:13 calls the one who keeps the matter a person of faithful spirit, and I have been reading that as coldness for two years. In the name of Jesus I am setting the delivery down.
- Fear that they will think I am taking the other side, you have no authority over my Sunday. The Holy Spirit is at work in both of those houses, and Ephesians 4:25 says they are all members one of another whether they are speaking or not. I am in this family as myself today, and I am not the channel.
- Lord, You have been in that car with me on every single drive home. I thank You, because Your word says You are acquainted with all my ways and You have never once needed me to carry a report. Whatever You do with both of those houses is Yours, and my mouth is mine, and tonight it is quiet.
