A Way ThroughIsaiah 30:21

Two Envelopes, One Saturday

This message is for the man holding two invitations to two family events on the same Saturday, sent by two halves of a family that no longer speak, both of whom know exactly what they are asking him to say by turning up

They came four days apart and they are propped against the same shelf, and he has walked past them about two hundred times.

The first one is his cousin's engagement party. The second is a lunch for his uncle's seventieth, and it is the same Saturday, the same afternoon, in two houses eleven minutes apart by car.

There is no version of this where the timing is an accident. Everybody in that family knows about everybody else's Saturday. What has happened is that the two halves of a family that stopped speaking three years ago have each held out a hand, and the hand is not really an invitation. It is a question, and the question is: which one of us do you belong to.

He has not replied to either. He has drafted about six messages and sent none of them, because every single one of them, however carefully worded, answers the question.

His wife asked him what he was going to do and he said he did not know, and that was the most honest sentence he said all week.

And here is what he has not said to anybody: he can feel that whatever he does on Saturday will be read as a verdict, and he has never once been asked to give one.

The choice you were handed is not the only ground

Let me name what has actually happened here before anything else, because it will not get named at either of those houses.

Two people have built a choice with exactly two doors in it and handed it to a third person who had nothing to do with the argument. That is not necessarily malice. People do this when they are hurt: they reach for the nearest thing that would prove they are not alone, and you are the nearest thing.

But a choice built by other people is not a map of reality. It is a map of their pain. And you are under no obligation to accept the borders they drew.

You are standing on more ground than the two feet they have offered you, and none of it was surveyed by either of those houses. Nobody is being kind to you here. Psalm 31:8 says He has set your feet in a large room, which is a picture of space rather than of a corner, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into a hallway with two envelopes on a shelf.

And Isaiah describes guidance in a way that most people misremember.

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.Isaiah 30:21

Behind you. Not in front, laid out in advance for inspection. The voice in that verse comes as you move, and it is not choosing between the right hand and the left. It is naming a way while you are already turning.

Being in the middle is not the same as being neutral

Neutral is a position about the dispute. It says: I have weighed this and I decline to conclude. Nobody is asking you to be neutral, and frankly nobody in that family would believe you if you claimed it.

What is available is something different and much older: you can be a son to both without being a witness for either. You can love two people who cannot be in the same room without becoming the room.

You are free to hold both of them without holding the argument, and those two things were never the same job. Scripture puts it plainly in Romans 12:18, where living peaceably is qualified twice, as much as lies in you and if it be possible, and the Holy Spirit is already at work in both of those houses without needing your Saturday to make His case.

Where your part ends

Say this plainly rather than implying it. Standing in the middle is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If one of those houses is not merely difficult but dangerous, do not go, and do not let a word on this page be used against you for not going. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.Proverbs 18:10

Runs into it. That is a verb of movement toward shelter, and Scripture puts it on the righteous rather than on the cowardly. You are safe inside a Name rather than inside a family's approval, and that tower does not come down when somebody is disappointed in you on a Saturday. Proverbs 18:10 puts the safety in Him rather than in getting the invitation right, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to run rather than merely to know he could.

The breakthrough

The invitations were never the enemy. Two households want you at their table, and there are people in this world who would give a great deal for that problem.

What is crushing you is not the choosing. It is the belief that whatever you choose is a sentence you are passing on somebody, and that you have been made the judge of something you were never in the room for.

> Judge not, that ye be not judged. > Matthew 7:1

That verse is usually read as a warning. Read it here as a release. You are not the judge of your own family, and the seat you have been backed toward is not one you have to sit in. Matthew 7:1 takes the bench away from you rather than putting you on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual work in both of those houses, which is work no verdict of yours could ever accomplish.

Nothing here requires a conversation. Nothing here tells you which envelope to answer, and no article should. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a decision about a Saturday: the right to know that the split is not yours to resolve, and to stop treating your own diary as a courtroom.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to name what is true about your own standing was given to you, and neither of those houses can issue it or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.

Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little he was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of a man's faith. It moved because somebody opened his mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with both halves of that family is His and always was.

  1. Choice they built for me, you are not the only ground and God never put me on it. Isaiah 30:21 says the word comes from behind while a man is already walking, and it is not a vote between the right hand and the left. In the name of Jesus I am standing somewhere neither of you drew.
  2. Fear of being called a traitor by people I love, you have no authority over my Saturday. The Holy Spirit is at work in both of those houses, and Matthew 7:1 takes the judge's seat away from me rather than sitting me down in it. I am a son in this family today, and I am not the verdict.
  3. Lord, You were in both of those houses long before three years ago and You are in them tonight. I thank You, because Your word sets my feet in a large room and You have never once required me to pick a corner of it. Whatever You do with the whole of them is Yours, and the ground under me is Yours too, and I am standing on it.
