The first message came on the eighth of November, which is earlier than last year, and she felt it land in her chest before she had finished reading it.
Just checking what you are doing this year.
That is all it said. It looks like an ordinary question. It is not an ordinary question and everybody involved knows it. Since the year everything happened there have been two Christmases in that family, held forty minutes apart, and every year she has to say which house she is walking into, and every year the one she does not say is told about it within a day.
She has tried everything. One year she did both, which pleased nobody and exhausted her. One year she went away entirely, which was read by both halves as a protest. One year she answered late, which they both took as her being got at by the other one.
November has become the worst month of her year and it is not even the month with the day in it.
And here is what she has never said out loud to anybody in that family: it is a question about a lunch, and it arrives in her body like a sentencing, and she has begun to dread the whole fall because of it.
The question has a false floor in it
Let me name what is actually happening before anything else, because nobody in either of those houses will name it.
The question is not what are you doing this year. The question is which of us do you belong to, and it has been dressed up as logistics so that nobody has to admit they are asking it.
That is why every answer fails. You have been trying to solve a scheduling problem that is not a scheduling problem, using diaries and travel times and fairness, and none of those tools work on it because the actual question is about allegiance.
You are not bad at this, and no year of it has been a failure of your ingenuity. That is not somebody letting you off. Psalm 56:8 says your wanderings are counted and your tears are kept in His bottle, which covers every one of those Novembers, and the Holy Spirit is the one raising it now to lift a weight rather than to hand you a better strategy.
And the psalm says something about space that is worth taking literally.
Thou hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.Psalm 31:8
Not shut up. Set in a large room. That is a picture of a person who was cornered and is now standing somewhere with space around them. It is not a promise that the corner has been dismantled. It is a report that the psalmist is no longer standing in it.
Refusing the frame is not refusing the family
You are allowed to answer the actual question, which is about a lunch, without answering the one underneath it. Where you eat on a Thursday in December is not a statement about who you love, and it becomes one only if you agree that it is.
They may keep reading it as one. That is theirs. What is yours is whether you accept the reading.
You are free to make an ordinary decision about a day without it being a testimony, and those two things were only ever joined by other people's grief. Scripture puts it plainly in Colossians 2:16, where Paul tells a church to let no one judge them over a holy day, and the Holy Spirit is at work in both of those houses on that Thursday whichever kitchen you are standing in.
Where your part ends
Say this plainly, not gently. Standing in the middle is never the same as walking into harm, and nothing here asks anybody into anything unsafe. If one of those houses is not merely tense but dangerous for you, do not go, and let nothing on this page be used against you for not going. Get yourself safe, tell one real person who can actually do something, and hold this: being safe is not a failure of peace.
But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.Psalm 3:3
The lifter up of your head. That is a phrase for somebody who has been walking with their chin down since the eighth of November. You are shielded and lifted by Him rather than by getting the answer right, and neither of those things depends on which lunch you attend. Psalm 3:3 puts the lifting in God rather than in a family's approval, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does it in a kitchen in fall, before December arrives.
The two Christmases were never the enemy. Two households that both want you at the table are two households that both love you, which is a real thing under all the pain of it.
What is crushing you is not the choosing. It is that you have accepted the job of settling with a lunch what two adults could not settle with three years, and no seating plan in the world can carry that weight.
> For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. > 1 Corinthians 14:33
He is not the source of the tangle you are in. That matters, because a woman under this much pressure usually starts to suspect that God is the one arranging the test. You are not being examined here, and the confusion in that family did not come from Him. 1 Corinthians 14:33 puts the confusion somewhere other than in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one working peace in a situation He did not author and is not standing outside of.
Nothing here tells you which house to go to. No article should. Nothing here asks you for a conversation, a policy, or an announcement. What is coming back to you is smaller and much heavier than a decision about December: the right to know that the split is not yours to resolve, and to stop reading a question about a lunch as a summons.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. Not in your head. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to say what is true about your own life was given to you, and neither of those houses can hand it over or take it back. Scripture is the ground under every word, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than loud.
Jesus set the measure at a seed, and He did not put it that low to shame anybody with how little she was holding. He put it there because no mountain ever moved on the size of the faith. It moved because somebody opened her mouth at it. So speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because whatever He does with both of those houses is His and always was.
- November question, you are not a verdict and God never made me the one who passes it. Psalm 31:8 says my feet are set in a large room rather than shut up in a corner, and a corner is exactly what you have been dressed up as. In the name of Jesus I am answering you as a question about a lunch.
- Dread that has taken the whole of fall, you have no authority over my year. The Holy Spirit is at work in both of those kitchens on that Thursday, and 1 Corinthians 14:33 says God is not the author of this confusion. I am in this family as myself today, and I am not the verdict on anybody.
- Lord, You have been at both of those tables every year since the split. I thank You, because Your word counted every November of it and kept it, and You have never once held one of my answers against me. Whatever You do with both of those houses is Yours, and the room I am standing in is large, and it is Yours too.
